In the interest of full disclosure, know this: I’ve been sitting on this Panini America Personal Collection Spotlight entry from Rhode Island collector Gregory Malloy since September. In fact, I almost forgot about it. But I’m glad I didn’t.
A collector who boasts as much passion as Malloy does for Memphis Grizzlies guard Xavier Henry deserves to have his collection showcased right here on The Knight’s Lance. So here goes . . .
Panini America Personal Collection Spotlight
Who:*Gregory Malloy, Bristol, Rhode Island
What:*Memphis Grizzlies guard Xavier Henry
“I chose Xavier Henry because in all the boxes of cards I was buying last year I was getting his cards — I think four or five hits in a row — so I decided I was gonna see if I could collect all of his autographs *and memorabilia cards.
“I’ve been collecting* cards ever since my grandfather gave me a Mint*Walter Payton*rookie card in 1989 and told me to hold on to it and never sell it. I was really heavy into collecting in the 1990s, and then I took a break. I would buy a pack here and there but within the last year or so I’ve come back full speed trying to get my collection back. I had to after I saw the type of cards I’ve been missing out on. Panini America really has some of the coolest cards. I think that’s really what got me back into collecting after 11 years.
“The cards I really want for my collection are the 2010-11 National Treasures Colossal Logoman autograph and the 2010-11 Gold Standard Standard Platinum and Black rookie auto. I have 68 cards total, 64 that are Panini America, including 16 memorabilia cards, 18 autographs and 34 patch autographs. One of my favorites is the 2010-11 Prestige Draft Class Logo Black Box Authentic. I was lucky to come across this card. I saw the card on eBay looking at a collection of Larry Sanders cards online.
“I said, ‘Wow, that’s a rare card that I’d love to get but it will never surface.’ Two days later I got it for a really good price and it was graded. I also like all the National* Treasures but the RPA is my favorite. Those are the best-looking cards out there.
