Fair enough, whatever my opinion or personal beliefs, those in the know sought to honor him.

I don't think any player that has been retired 15 years or less should be eligible for immortal status. Norm Provan was my pick even though I knew he was long odds against Joey and Smellmifinger.

I've read the book 'Never Before, Never Again' about St George and the 11 Premierships, 2 Immortals and their mate a half back/centre wreaked havoc in the Dragons territory while on the grog, if what Johns was using had been available to those 3 in their day they would have been the same as Joey, Johns should have been busted by the cops because evidently every man & his dog in Newcastle knew that Johns was on something illegal, but the criteria for an immortal didn't take into account what they did off the field.

Let's not forget Mal won premierships with players like Daley, Stuart, Walters, Belcher, Clyde along side him. Johns didn't exactly have that great a team around him.

Johns made everyone better around him. The mark of a true champion.
A few Knights players owe their origin careers to him.

On his playing career alone, I doubt Meninga would get in and lucky he is coaching a QLD team that wouldnt need a coach to win.

Maddog MacDougall, Matt Johns, Paul Harrogan, Robbie O'Davis, Lee Jackson in 1997 with M Gidley, Albert, Buderus, Craigie coming through and seasoned Glanville, Muir and Butterfield in 1997.

O'Davis, M Gidley, Tahu, A MacDougall, Buderus, Simpson, Kennedy in 2001.

I think he had alright sides. [[ When I wrote this, I meant decent, well rounded sides. Canberra certainly had a number of 'stars' ]]

I will say this, A Johns did lift the players around him.

are meningas premierships with souths that big of an achievement? there were only 3 really consistent sides in that comp and there is no way the brl comp compared to the arl/nrl comps when the knights won. just an opinion
