Mate with that kind of mentality, it's no wonder the hobby is in the condition it is. So buying a redemption is a lucky dip now? Sure it is as far as whether the card will be made or not, we all know that and buy with that in mind. But now we have to expect that the card may be bent, smudged or just in shabby condition?
You ask what they are supposed to do with that card now....like it is my problem. Even if that is an issue, nothing a bonus card can't fix. Why can't they send an additional card to compensate for an inferior product? Whether you think it's their fault or not, it's the nature of the business for them. It's their name on the product, they make the profits from it, so they have to assume the responsibility for things that go wrong. Not asking to move heaven and earth, I just think if they are going to send out a card that has an OBVIOUS major flaw, they should do WHATEVER THEY CAN to rectify the situation.
I'm not trying to have a go at you or anything, I'm just stating my opinion. If you buy a pack of cards, you can hope that they will all be gem mint condition, but you cannot expect that will be the case. If you buy a redemption, you are not even guaranteed to get the card at all!
I only asked what they would do with the card because you suggested they could just send you another one in the print run...someone is going to have to receive the smudged card though, right?
I agree that I wouldn't be too happy about receiving a redemption in poor condition, and that I would want some form of compensation...just not sure that I would be entitled to it. Conversely, I would be stoked to get an awesomely fantastic gem mint card via redemption...but wouldn't send UD a bonus for the privilege. I'm sure if you kick up a stink, they may well send you a bonus card, but they are not going to send you a bonus with the pack that they have sent your redemption in.
lol....I didn't know UD paid you to buy their product? Poor example....since I am actually paying UD for the card (one way or another) they have an obligation to deliver a quality product. If they sent you an immaculate card.....then they would simply be doing their job.
I didn't say send the card out to someone else and give me theirs, I said send an unredeemed one out (which may not be possible) or send something as a replacement.
There is a little more involved in the actual pack/box/case process then in a single redemption process. It's easy to see this card has a flaw and whoever packaged this card up and sent it to me would have seen that. It was put in a penny sleeve, then in a hard case and then in a bubble mailer. How many packs have you opened where you received a card like that....lol?!?! A lot harder to pick something like this up through pack production. I've read many posts regarding damaged cards from sealed packs, and UD has usually sent something as a replacement when someone has complained, from what I have seen. I can understand how a damaged or inferior card may make it's way into a sealed pack, because that process is intensive. MY WHOLE POINT was that this has been individually handled and looked at and they have still sent it out. I shouldn't have to bring it to their attention or complain to get some sort of compensation.
To be honest I wasn't really planning on chasing this up cause I really can't be bothered. I was just interested in seeing what some thoughts out there were. Hearing some people's opinions and justifications though is a little troublesome. By the sounds of things from a couple of guys
-UD has no obligation to it's customers to provide quality products (that justify the high price tag some of these products)
-if you buy redemptions you deserve whatever you get because you gambled
-Even though the athlete was paid by UD to sign the card (so therefore is an employee of UD for all intensive purposes), there is no obligation by UD to deliver what you're paying for.
I didn't receive a Jason Thompson autograph as stated.......I received a pen mark that was smudged by Jason Thompson...lol.
As unfortunate as it is that your card had a smudged autograph, the simple fact is Upper Deck fulfilled their obligation to your redemption. You were due to receive a signed card by these 3 players, which is what you received.
Blame Jason Thompson for rushing through the 10,000 or so autos he has to sign this year.
Sure its not great that its smudged, but hey, at least you got the card you were due!
I would be perfectly fine with paying the going rate for that card even with the smudge. It's a little smudge that does nothing to ruin the cards appeal. Sure you'd like the card signed perfectly, but then mistakes do happen with on card autos and they only get 1 shot at it given it has to be sent to 3 guys and is serial numbered. At least it's not a sticker and smudged, then you have a clear right to be pissed at them.
I'm not sure what these opinions us having has to do with 'the state the hobby is in' though...? Explain.

Honestly mate, if you don't get it, I'm not going to go into it. It's obvious we all have different opinions on the matter, and that's ok with me. I wasn't expecting this thread to turn out the way it has, and it's clearly going around in circles. If you guys are fine with receiving damaged cards and horrible replacements for redemption's, well good luck to you. Each to their own

No. Explain. You asked for opinions, then you got them, and not only told us we were wrong but told us we are what is bringing the hobby down.
This card is not damaged. It's a sweet card with 3 sweet on card autos and 1 happens to have a slight smudge which can happen. Unfortunately someone has to get the smudged card, and it was you, and you don't like it. I'd be fine with it cause it's not in any way damaged. But that's fine that you're not happy with it, each to their own.
Now where does 'horrible replacements for redemptions' come into this thread/topic? Completely different topic.
