Has anyone who has been to one of these explain how $30 stacks up to any other card fair?

There's two either side of it in Melbourne at half the price, and I don't understand where they've pulled this figure for tickets from?

I support what your saying, about entrance costs,but setting up these events do not come cheap.It,s all the overheads that take a huge chunk out of the intake.Hire of the venue,hire of tables,paying staff to set up the venue, insurance, cleaning, hire of portable air conditioning if none at the venue,lighting,security and even paying for food vendors if there are none on the premises.What I miss about not go to these events is that I miss all the friends I made,and now I don't get to see them anymore. I'm speaking from experience, as I used to help set up Collectormania at Penrith.

Completely understand and appreciate the impact and relevance of the overheads you've mentioned.

My question is purely in the context of there being a separate card fair in Mount Waverley on 14/7 thats about $5 entry, the Melbourne Card Fair the week later which is about $10, and then another that's booked in Malvern for a few weeks later (can't find a price).

Never been to the Hobby Hangout one before - just curious as to what justifies the significant price jump that makes it worthwhile to attend? All I can see is a UFC guy is doing a Q&A. Happy to be wrong, interested in going, but also, what am I missing?

I've never been to the Hobby Hangout event in Sydney which I think has the $30 entrance price.I could be wrong. And I know there is not much in the way of NRL cards which is what I collect. If you have markets around your area try them.I have more enjoyment walking around them,and sometimes you find some great bargains.

Definitely - very much in the same boat. There for AFL stuff, maybe cricket at a pinch. So it also helps to know that's not an event where it's mostly NBA or Pokemon.

At the same time, the Mount Waverley one is very catered to a certain demographic that doesn't combine well with the lack of ventilation.

Hi all, i am not one of the organisers of these trading card shows but having been a factory sealed wax dealer for 21 years online and in person at these trading card shows, the hobby hangout shows are Australia's version of the annual Nationals in Chicago/Atlantic City/Cleveland and the Macau show, obviously at a much different scale. The vendors are of a larger scale with more interstate dealers attending with a broader depth of sealed product and single raw/graded cards. The smaller Collectorcon shows in Penrith/Campbelltown/Newcastle have a fair amount of trading card vendors, but these are more general pop culture/collectable shows with vendors across the whole spectrum from personal collections, second hand goods, older stock to the latest sealed products.

We also have a Sydney trading card show which would be equivalent to the smaller Melbourne trading card shows where they are close to the Hobby hangout variants but possibly on a slightly toned down scale with more smaller traders with PC on display along with the larger dealers with sealed and unsealed product. As a collector and dealer in sealed trading card product, i would say based on my experience, the Hobby Hangouts are the premier trading card shows on the East Coast of Australia and the balance of shows make up the numbers. I can see people having an issue with the $30-$40 entry fee for the Hobby Hangout, but the overheads are greater than the smaller shows and the quality of the venue/vendors is noticeably more professional. If you ever get a chance to go to the National in America, the show is much bigger obviously but the entry prices are still $25USD per day.

With Aussie NRL, Cricket and AFL cards, i believe these would be possibly underrepresented at the Hobby Hangout especially for singles. I know a few dealers of NRL and Cricket that regularly sell at the Collectorcons such as Les and Sonny, but they would be of different eras as Les has quite a good collection of older ARL/NRL singles and sets and Sonny would have more modern stock. With the table prices and general scale of NBA/UFC/F1/Soccer/MLB/NFL/WWE/AEW/Pokemon/One Piece collectors going to these specialised trading card shows such as the Hobby Hangout, there is probably a cost justification and market depth issue with NRL/AFL/Cricket singles sellers hiring a stall at these shows. I hope this helps a little bit; i'll see some of you at the Melbourne Hobby Hangout this Sunday!
