From The Pitch this week:
A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH

Larry Stone, Seattle Times – Blogs – 16 April

Through the magic of Twitter, I ran across this video on You Tube, and I loved it. It's a musical ode to Hyphen -- Ryan Rowland-Smith -- entitled "Number 18 -- Ryan Rowland-Smith Song."

Actually, I was led to it from a tweet by none other than Rowland-Smith (Twitter address: hyphen18) himself, who retweeted it with the message: "What a song!! Put it on itunes!!"

The singer-songwriter, according to her Twitter page, is Erin Abbott of Seattle, and what sets this song apart from other such efforts I've seen are the clever lyrics (which I've reproduced below, straight from YouTube) and Abbott's very appealing voice. And no, I'm not her agent. I've never met her in my life. I just appreciate good work.

This reminds me of another player tribute song that received considerable internet action a few years ago, when the Braves traded for Mark Teixeira. It didn't work out quite the way the performers hoped, but I defy you not to go around singing this song all day long.

You'll find the Rowland-Smith lyrics [here]:

WELL Vargas and Fister, they sure can make me swoon
Texeira, he takes my breath away
Kelly, Lowe and Felix can send me to the moon
And there's a special place in my heart for the DA

Lee, White, Snell, League I'm sure they're all great guys
But I know they're just not the ones for me
Cause there's only one with Oakleys, on his oh-so-dreamy eyes
And he hails from far across the sea

Ryan Rowland-Smith is who were winning with
He’s our wonder from down under and he is a man of myth
He came here on a surfboard and he fought a kangaroo
And if you ever met him then I bet that you could too

He’s my Aussie heartthrob and he doesn't even know it
But when he starts its all worthwhile
His 3.62 ERA, it doesn't mean a lot to me
because I like his smile

Ryan Rowland-Smith is who were winning with
He's our wonder from down under, and he is a man of myth
He barbeques all winter and drinks beer with every meal
And if you came from Australia , too, you'd know just how it feels!

When he throws his changeups, are they to Rob Johnson's glove?
Or are they straight to my heart?
Number three on the rotation, but he's number one with me
And I hope we'll never part if we ever meet (I heard he can fly)

Ryan Rowland-Smith is who were winning with
He's our wonder from down under and he is a man of myth
His best friend is a great white shark, his car is a canoe
His pitches are like boomerangs returning fast and true

Ryan Rowland-Smith is who were winning with
He's our wonder from down under and he is a man of myth
His bed is made of crocodiles, his heart is made of steel
He's super and amazing and a little bit unreal
