(Respectfully) a question for the computer nerds

Hey all,

I've got a request from a friend to get them set up with an ADSL for their home. I am going to set it up for them, but I haven't really kept up with things for the last 18 months. I was aware that for a while there, the standards were a bit up in the air 802.xx etc.

Can someone make some suggestions as to what wireless ADSL modem/router to get for them, and a wireless network card for their laptop (for the expansion slots)???

Are you setting up ADSL from start or setting up wireless environment from ADSL connection? The easiest way is to buy the modem is just talk to isp... or see what the isp offers for wireless... usually, isp offers certain ADSL modems on their own websites.. you can easily spot it here..

I am not so certain how it works in WA.. but you can definitely buy combo, modem+wireless cards at fairly cheap price and nowadays, many ADSL modem are compatible with 802.bg standards as well as ADSL2.. 8 RJ45 ports and still would go under 200$ including one usb/pcmcia wireless card.. unless the laptop ur installing is centrino or core duo/solo..

Don't have any Modem Routers as yet, but we are using some Wireless Routers in the Office. (actually picking up a couple of Wireless Modem Routers today from our ISP).

For speed, and connectivety, I'd reccommend the N1 Mimo feature, currently top of the range.

Belkin's are a great brand.

Do note that if you have a wireless network card (inside the Notebook) and not a card itself, that you will only get the Speed equivilent from the Notebook (56MBps).

If you pick up a matching USB Key, PCI Card, you should achieve the full potential (we were able to get a 300MBps on our N1s here, which is 3x faster than our 100MBps Ethernet Cables, but slower than the 1.0GBps Connections).
