I am helping out do some research for a business plan that involves having members verified before they can do business together.
The poll question: Would requiring you to fax/mail/upload scans of your documents for 100pts of ID to be verified deter you from signing up to a new online site?
Also a side questions outside the poll: if online verification was available through answering questions (such as medicare no and license no) that connected to secure verification services to confirm ID, how would you feel about that.
I don't see a problem with the 100pt check. Paypal already makes you do some verifications when you reach certain milestones.
Perhaps if it was only once you reach a certain level, or want to be involved in particular types of deals, otherwise it might scare away some that want to remain anonymous??
Also, the 100pt check would eliminate duplicate trading names too!

Fair enough then. I guess it comes down to the individual situation. For example, when my paypal account reached over certain amount of positive balance, I was forced to upload an image of my passport and drivers license for them to 'verify'.When it is a 'reputable' company with a lot to lose, you can usually trust the information is safe, if you don't, then you are probably not the 'target market' anyway, if you know what I mean?
Obviously the photo elementof a DL or Passport is redundant as they don't know what I look like, so it is not really anywhere near 100 points. It is really more like a 50point check. The key is to make it more 'secure' without making it too many hoops for the user to jump through. With the Paypal one I did, it was bad enough that I needed to get my passport (not usually carried around with me) instead of being able to use what was in my wallet. If I didn't have my passport, then I would have needed to get all sorts of bills and other rubbish scanned and that would have annoyed me!
As long as there is a worthy cause, then the 100pt check is ok, otherwise I think it is too much for a lot of people!
I wouldn't be keen on sending any scan/faxes of drivers or passport if it wasn't something that was very trustworthy. It would depend on the site, the reason it's need and who would be seeing it. Way to much sketchy stuff happens with people info online
