Its not like stars today get treated any different when it comes to refs calls ... oh wait
Dont forget that this guy went to jail for gambling and influencing NBA game results for the mob.
I have played basketball at various levels and watched tonnes of nba/nbl/international/local cba and seabl etc and even reffed myself at a local level over my 41 yrs of life and yep there is indifference when it comes to refs, its called human nature, we all like/dislike certain people and while as a ref you are to remain unbiased and professional always, im sure our animal instincts shine through from time to time, superstars will get certain calls from certain refs, rookies wont..that's an obvious one, what about the golden years of mj, the rule was he was to make it to the basket unhindered!!!
at the end of the day any sport will have this conundrum, not just the nba...
I own a copy of this book and have read it and yes, it is a great read!
I genuinely believe most of the claims that Tim makes in the book. There is too much indicating he is right.
This guy was able to bet on NBA games at a ridiculously high winning percentage (I think 70-80%), by knowing which refs were going to be officiating certain games.
It talks about how there were numerous refs that got caught up in scams where they were given 1st class flights around the country to ref games, then they would downgrade them to economy and pocket the difference, which they all knew full well to be illegal, yet the NBA does not discipline them. Some of them get promoted to referee supervisors so they are not directly in the spotlight.
I found it hard to read that sort of thing about the game that I love, but it is a likely reality!
No, he was never convicted of influencing games. He was only convicted for betting on games. The FBI were convinced that he never influenced a game to suit his bets. There is one particular game where he reffed and had placed a bet (through the mob contacts) on the Spurs. In that game, he ejected coach Pop early in the game, even though he bet on the Spurs!
Just because you were not convicted does not mean it didn't happen.Always 2 sides to the story.

thats how i see it.... its a lot deeper than his refereeing or his betsInteresting!
He did convince the FBI that he wasn't fixing though, at least he tells it that way.
Doesn't change the other points about the commish knowing full well that it is happening
hey Aram, i agree with ya mate but i just think at any high level sport a rookie and a veteran player should not be treated differently and as we know, the big names get away with a lot.
