Hey guys,
Thought I would re-introduce myself with my 1000th post.
So I started collecting AFL cards halfway through last year and decided to specifically collect Essendon cards as they are my team.
Well it's been an interesting 12 months to be a collector and quite fortunate I started when things became interesting.
The 2012 Footycards Draft Prospects release really ignited my passion for footy cards and collecting and it was a great series to bust and collect.
Now I'm not going to bash Select. In fact, I think they've done pretty well in areas such as customer service (based on previous experience).
The only criticism I would have about the footy card industry, is the lack of variety and creativity with inserts. Compared to other sports such as Basketball, we aren't as privileged with the sheer range and amount of inserts. Hopefully, this changes in the near future, as a fan it would be great to have new and interesting ideas develop into something to collect.
Although I'm relatively new compared to other competitors, it's still been fun to learn about the card industry and discover new things. Card forums, shops and card shows have been great for me personally, meeting similar collectors and helping to build my collection.
The main reason I collect cards is probably the sense of history behind them. Being able to pick up a card from a certain year tells you a lot about the competition and the players your team has drafted etc. Also gives you something to talk to the players about when you meet them.
While my passion has somewhat fluctuated depending on releases and what's available, I have side projects (Moose PC) to keep me busy and occupied.
My main advice for new collectors is to create certain goals and targets that are achievable. There's nothing more satisfying than create a set chase or ticking off a card off the wantlist.
Hopefully I will be able to look back in another 12 months time and re-evaluate my passion.
Happy Collecting!
