R.I.P. Tony Greig

This is really sad news :(, I was looking forward to seeing him return to the commentary box in the new year. R.I.P Tony Greig

A very brave man. His role in World Series Cricket should never be forgotten, he helped to sign a lot of disenchanted, underpaid players and was then ostracised by his adopted country for doing so. Of all the players who signed for WSC, Greigy probably stood to lose the most yet he did it nevertheless.

He was a damn good allrounder, with a Test record of 3599 runs @ 40.43 (8 x 100's, highest score 148), 141 wickets @ 32.20 (6 x 5 wicket hauls, best innings bowling of 8 for 86, best match bowling of 13 for 156) and 87 catches from 58 matches.

The Tony Greig/Bill Lawry"niggling/aggro thing" in the Channel 9 Commentary box is already a part of sports telecasting folklore......and we all have our favourite memories of it :-)

I will remember Greigy as an excitable commentator who never took himself seriously and always had the best interests of the game at heart.

Rest In Peace mate and thanks from a cricket fan.

What a maaaarvelous reflection on a great man Matty !! Well said

Very sad news today. I thought he would be back in the new year too after seeing that interview they did with him. Maybe the cancer was worse then we all knew.

RIP Tony Greig.

Papers are saying a heart attack....probably a blessing if it meant avoiding extended pain and suffering over the next 12 months or so battling the cancer.

Packer always promised him a job for life for sticking by his side with World Series and he was true to his word. Great loyalty from both men.

Greigy's passion and enthusiasm in the commentary box was superb - if you get a chance YouTube Warney's MCG hat trick and you've got the great man at his finest...
