Poker Players?

Are there any other fellow board members who play poker at all? I'm currently with the APL and they run a pretty good free and buy-in leagues around Perth that I play twice a week. I have won 1 tournament and made the final table many a time. How does everyone else go?

Myself and my wife are beginners, but are starting to get really into it. We have poker nights around friends' places quite a bit in Kalgoorlie.

Good excuse (not that we need one) to put away some grog and have some laughs.

saw an APL advert in the x-press a few weeks back and have been meaning to check out a tourney but haven't done it yet #-o
Am interested to know how the free ones work and how much are the buy in ones?

recently ive been playing quite regularly with a bunch of mates for small $$. we started about 3 months ago, usually 4 or 5 of us play and we have buy ins from $10-$25. second place gets money back and first takes the rest. my friends obviously aren't very good poker players cos i've finished out of the money only twice in the 15-20 odd tourneys we've had.
ozcard member 'prototype' got me into the online game which is a different story altogether. i've 'invested' over $400 since joining a bit over 6 months ago, never ever cashed out anything! still have balance, but its currently under $100. been great fun tho and have 'learnt' lots(i think).
one thing i hate about poker is bad beats! seems to happen to me all the time online #-o

i love poker! i play down at the casino from time to time (when i can afford it) I've been thinking about geting into the APL for a bit of fun but havnt got around to it yet

i play exclusively online, im mainly over at party, but bonus whore with ub, fulltilt, stars, and ladbrokes.
im not a fan of live play, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages for me, parking, travel, annoying people, dealer mistakes, rake, poor food, etc.
whereas online, i cn multi 5 tables, get rakeback, can eat when i want, can surf the web, and generally relax at home. there is also a ton of tables to select from without the long waits.

plus star shit ty is well recognised as being a terrible poker room by all those on the pokernetwork.com. crown is far better

Yeah I play on Poker stars because most of my friends are at the casino now 40+ hours a week (making an absolute killing, they are damn good though)!

I don't play as much as I used to because I'm too impatient now, but I've cashed out $100 US in the last 3 months. Just playing with the $40 or so I have left in the account and if it goes it goes otherwise I'll continue to cash out. With that said I do win a hell of a lot more than I lose, but I have been playing hold'em for 5 years now before it got big over here.

Don't play in any real comps, but love playing with my mates. Couple of them have some briefcases full of chips, we play Texas Hold'em, I've own a couple of times, I usually get down to the bottom 3. They call me "riverboy" because I seem to win most of my HIGH ROUND BETS on the river.

hahahah i know, but we're all friends so yeahhh, they get angry, but after a while they cool down. i pay them to get me a cool drink from the fridge, that gets them happy.. hahahaha.

I used to play a fair bit with the APL in NSW and also online at UB. Don't get the time no more, but still love the game. Looking to get back into it soon though. I'm not great, I can't read people too well, so that is my downfall, lol.

How the free ones work is that you earn points and obviously the better you finish, the more you earn. The points are then tallied at the end of the season (I think its every 3 or 4 months) and then you go to the state champs to battle with the best. You need either a certain amount of points or be a venue leader or something.

With the buy in tournaments, they happen on the 2nd sunday of every month around metro Perth and they cost $55 to buy in. I've only been to one before and there was nearly 200 and finished 35th.

If you win either the state or buy-in champs, then you go to Sydney to compete in the national champs to win $500 000.

I'm currently playing at Ogdens in Gosnells on wednesday night and sunday arvos. I went in sunday and played with the mindset of beeing very aggressive and it payed off quite well as I came 4th and the reason I went out was becuase I was beeing too cautiuos. So it pays to attack the 'deers in the headlights'.

im a little wary of the tournament structure of the local pubs, etc. often its run like a turbo setup, and it ends up being a crapshoot. not that donkaments aint a crapshoot anyway, its just heightened by the terrible structures that often plague them. star city is one of the worst offenders, just terrible with their last tournament

I found it does pay to be aggressive in the APL points games. As long as you play confident and be aggressive, it will take you far more often than not for those games. I always get too cautious and end up going out through lack of chips basically. Like Yellows says, the structure sucks for those games so you really don't have much choice but to go in aggressive to get some pots to stay in the game longer. Once you win some, you can sit back for a little and wait on some good cards and watch your opponents knock each other out for a bit.

well i joined the APL and attended my first event on tuesday evening.
it was fun. nearly lasted to the first break, only to fall to 3 aces against my 2 pairs. had a reasonable shot at a straight to win on the river, but not this time.

at least i didn't shoot myself in the foot (much) first time around. looking forward to playing some more
