Hey gang. Just a couple of thoughts I've been pondering...
The value of all the cards that we buy, sell and trade are, like shares in a company, purely perceived. That is to say, the popularity of fighter / personality and a belief in their future success drives up the value. (Okay so stating the obvious so far - I'm still a noob, k?)
I'm interested to know what you think about numbered parallels / rare cards. Are there traditional rules or guidelines for this?
For example; is an auto numbered 001/100 worth more, the same, or less than 100/100.
Is the symmetry of 22/188 worth more than 137/188?
Is the card's base set number also an influence. Would a Series 4 Keith Jardine 26/88 Parallel be worth more because his base card is numbered 26?
I'm also curious about "on-card" and "in-person" autos.
If I take a rare card to the UFC auto session when they return to Sydney early next year, and get the fighter's auto on the card, does that possibly damage the value of the card if I can't prove that the IP auto is genuine?
On card autos are definitely worth more than a sticker auto, just looks way better on the card. Though how much more? i dont know.
As for the numbering, personally i dont care at all. Its not like were are dealing with a Le Bron card numbered 23. The numbers really dont have any significance in relation to the fighters. Youd have to be a bit of an idiot imo to bid more just cos of the number for a MMA card.. I could understand people wanting the #1 card.. but thats about it.
And as for getting cards signed personally. imo it ruins the card. They arent designed to have autos on them, the value is way more personal than commercial in that instance.
Matt that's pretty much what I figured with the IP autos.
Might take some base or gold parallels and get them signed in silver ink or something. Purely for my collection. As you rightly point out, they would have more personal value than trade value.
I think the whole issue of on card autos will be interesting. We havent seen any aside from the TUF auto's and they are a whole different set with few big name guys.
Knockout im pretty sure is supposed to be nearly all oncard and i know Leaf want their next set all oncard too. Will be interesing to see how it affects prices when another lower end set similiar to something like Main Event comes out with oncard. how will those prices compare?

I think a fighters popularity has a lot to do with high prices on their cards ie. if lots of people like GSP and all want his Auto cards, then the price goes up (supply and demand dude!!).
