OK....

Not often I'm asking Q's about this, but it's got my head hurting I just have to ask....

I'm trying to put an oldER IDE Hard Drive into a newER PC (Compaq Presario SR1599AN) via the SATA Connectors.

New SATA Drive will carry my OS, and the IDE Drives will be extra storage (for Music, Porn, the usual). - Got in before anyone else! =D>

I've done a few Google's but all the forums I've read all say reletively the same thing. But I'm not getting anywhere.

Anyone done this before? Or know a solution for me?

EDIT:
Have a SATA to IDE convertor, but still not working......

Is there something special I need to do, Jumpers on the IDE, or plug in certain # of the SATA ports, or..??

Well, they're adult-content related videos. Some are movies, some are straight out scenes...

But we won't get into that.

Dunno anything about the Drives peoples????

Yeah ya do Billy, I got one... I forgot to mention that before...

It's just not working... all the steps people say, and even the manual...

Mavsman,

sorry for late reply. lol
well, SATA drives are quite different from IDE HDDs..
SATA is actually an old technology which was abondoned decades ago because people that time thought it won't happen... serialized parelllel accessed drive..

Presario SR 1599 is actually SATA enabled for factory settings, so u don't need SATA connectors..it seems u want to use ur old IDEs HDDs for extra storage.. the best solution is to get HDD Closure.. which will costs $55 max with aluminium casing... almost no heat with external fan.

so here are the solutions.
1. u bought Compaq Presario SR1599AN, so it's SATA enabled HDD.. probably comes with 200GB or larger.. i assumed. so if u want to put ur old IDEs. set your IDEs jumpers to slave..

usually the computer has 4 BUS cable inside ur computer

it's listed as

primary master
primary slave
secondary master
secondary slave

if u have DVD/DVDr rom, usually factory setting will be set up as primary slave...and ur SATA HDD will be set as primary master.

so u can set ur IDEs remaining free cable with two nodes, one master and one slave.
just check on ur IDEs... and follow the instructions written on the HDDs.

but my suggestion is to get an external HDD closure so u can move ur data anywhere, for one harddisk and another harddisk to set as a slave.. assuming u have two IDEs.

if it's only one IDE, just set the slave and connect in the cable inside ur computer, should work fine.

i am just assuming ur computer specifications are same or almost same as below.

Processor Intel® Pentium® D Processor 830 (#) with HT Technology and EM64T

x surround L/R, 1 x surround rear L/R, 1 x central/LFE), 1 x SPDIF-in,
1 x SPDIF-out

if it's not still working, plz identify the initial changes..
but usually SATA based should be able to use IDEs.. coz they come out after SATA... the technology should be able to accept IDEs without converter..

so far, all i know is IDE->SATA existed because it needs to convert IDE to SATA.. but SATA -> IDE should be already working..

Thanks Lin, appologies for my late reply.

I'll check this out some more on Tuesday when I get back to work. But you're pretty spot on with the descriptions, etc.

Correct, I'm trying to put some more older IDE Drives into the newer Presario, which only has ports for SATA Drives.

I'll check it out when I get back to work, and if need be I'll drop you a PM, you sound like you know what you're on about.

Cheers bud!

RESOLVED!!!

Hey Lin, thanks for the help mate.

What I did (and for those interested also), I had to make the DVD Burner Drive into a SLAVE, and the IDE into a Master.

As all SATA Drives are Masters, it had to be the same, but the problem was the DVD Drive was also a Master.

All fixed!

Havent tested with a 3rd Drive yet...

mavsman,

Glad to hear it's working now..
yes.. usually the problem with master/slave gave a bit of headche especially u have alot of drives...

always good to have external drives as well, portable, compact and flexible for data transfer..

have a nice day.
