...but what else would you expect from the company owned by EBAY...

So I just got sent $175AU for a deal. Good. I could accept it in AU or US funds. However paypal wants to convert it to only $167US, when the exchange rate would be worth $172! $5 just for a foreign currency? GTFO.

So... anybody want to exchange some $AU for some $US? There'd be a small fee for sending a gift payment 'cross-border' but if we each included the fee in the payment (ie choose 'they pay the fee') then it'd still work out fair.

LMK?

you'll just be dividing your fee by two and paying half each, eBay wins.

But if we were to exchange say $174AU for $170US then it'd still be better than giving it to paypal and maybe even keep something on top. I just can't get over taking $5, what a crock

This might sound crazy but you would get ripped harder by one of the big banks on a foreign currency transfer.

no $5.71 in fees then your $5 so between us $10.71 on a $175 deal next time ill add some more for your troubles mate.

This is nothing new. Paypal are just a financial institution, hence will always make money on the spread. Normally its around 2-3c, much less than any of the banks (+ the banks will then slug you a fee normally).

Guess what... Paypal is still being completely full of ****.

I have $25.25US in my paypal balance. I owe somebody in Canada $25. According to their 'fees' page sending personal payments from your account balance is free. However, if sending cross-border there is a fee. I looked at this 'cross-border fees page' and it says that to Canada it is 1% (bearing in mind that I am accessing the paypal.com/nz site...). So, I go to send this guy the $25.25 and if I choose to pay the fee I need to add funds from my credit card and then the cost is almost $27. If I select for him to pay the fee, it suddenly says that he will receive $23.97.
Um... since when did 1% become 5.06%?????????

PAYPAL IS A FKING RIPOFF COMPANY OWNED BY A COMPANY WITH ZERO MORALS CALLED EBAY.

Seriously... why bother having an 'email us' link...

Me:
Where the hell do you get off as a company... I am sending a personal payment (I owe him $25US) to a person in Canada. According to your 'additional fees' page the cross-border fee for this payment is 1%, so when I'm sending $25.25US (the entire $US balance from my paypal account), how the hell does that suddenly become a fee of well over $1??? You're charging over 5% when the fees page specifically states 1%, and I can't find any other information about further fees. What the hell kind of rip-off website are you???
I am not going to send this payment until you clarify, because I don't want him to either lose $1.28, or me to have to pay the extra from my credit card and incur an even greater fee!!

Hello Graeme my name is Christine from PayPal Customer Service.

I sincerely apologize for whatever inconvenience this issue has caused you and the trouble you had to go through to contact us and have an issue addressed. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to offer my assistance.

I am glad to inform you that when you use the personal payment, your recipient doesn’t have to pay for the standard receiving fee of 2.9%+.30. The reason why the cross-border fee remains is because this fee covers the cost of the extra processing required for payments between different countries and regions and varies according to country and currency.

You can view the cross-border fee for your account by following these steps:
1. Go to www.paypal.com and log in to your account.
2. Click ‘Fees’ at the bottom of any PayPal page.
3. Click ‘cross-border payments

I’m glad to have resolved your concern by giving you all the details needed to complete this. Please do not hesitate to email us back if you need additional information. You are also welcome to call us at + 1-402-935-2080 (4:00 AM PT to 10:00 PM PT, Monday through Friday. or 6:00 AM PT to 8:00 PM PT, Saturday and Sunday).

Sincerely,
Christine
PayPal, an eBay Company

(and that last line pretty much says it all).
Way to completely NOT answer my question and prove that you are indeed a complete piece of crap company.

I dont think they're to bad...in comparison to the alternatives. Given they're the only option, it could be worse!

Happy NY mate, have a few Summer Ales....great beer - the best thing out of NZ since Trent Croad!

through fees? i'm not following....guess i havent read all the threads on here???....i havent had any issues anyway!?

Well yeah that but they freeze people's money "randomly" to do investigations, and collect interest off all the frozen funds while doing so.
They also have a clearly flawed, one sided policy of siding with the buyer since its well, just easier than finding out the truth and are letting people get away with online fraud since they know about what is going on for a fact!
Not to mention the huge conflict of interest in owning the company that is responsible for people selling goods, and also the company that receives the money for these goods and has the power to decide on any transaction within.

Sounds like the general "scan your message for keywords without reading it and reply with something completely useless" tactic there Graeme.

Oh and they also decided group breaks are not allowed didn't they? I remember Grayson and some other YouTube guys having trouble from them. Heaven forbid people have fun with the hobby. They we're probably just missing out on some fees somewhere along the line.
