As with the likes of Pele (football), Michael Jordan (Basketball) and Wayne Gretzky (Hockey) and simple black and white statistics don't always tell the true story of the actual impact an individual player can have on a team game. Such is the case with Adam Gilchrist.
He changed the face of the game in so many ways.
No longer is a batting average in the low-30's enough for a wicket-keeper to hold down a Test spot with any confidence (Incidentally, Ian Healy's Test average was 27.39 yet he was a wicket-keeping genius).
Where once a score of 5/100 would bring joy to the opposition, there remained always - ALWAYS - the fear of a rapid Gilchrist-led revival, a score of 300+ and then a fight for survival in the McGrath and Warne playground.
The uncomplicated, cheerful, respectful, passionate manner in which Adam played his cricket and is a proud ambassador of his country should be something that kids today should consider lesson A1 in regards to personal conduct.
As for a favourite memory....crikey, this is such a hard bloody task. There's the 149* in his second Test, the 149 in the 2007 World Cup Final, the 58-ball century against England in 2006-07, his maiden ODI century in 1997-98, the pyrotechnic 122 against India in the 2001 Mumbai Test.....bloody hell!!
I have settled with his innings of 204 not out against South Africa in 2002 - mostly because I remember staying awake until some silly hour to watch it!! The innings came not long after the rumour about Michael Slater fathering one of Gilly's children, and I can recall a pretty distasteful banner some cockhead put up at the ground. Gilchrist and Damien Martyn added 317 in that innings. Enjoy
Your thoughts and memories please!!
