Just seconds after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced during the 2015 NFL Draft that the Jacksonville Jaguars had selected linebacker Dante Fowler Jr. with the third overall pick, the first thing the former Florida Gator did was make his way down to Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre stage, stopping en route to slip on his official New Era Jaguars Draft Hat.
Perhaps unbeknownst to most folks watching the draft that night, Fowler’s hat was equipped with a hidden New Era Cap Cam that documented his special moment from a most unique perspective. Eventually, that very hat — along with all the others worn on stage during the NFL Draft — made its way back to Panini America HQ (hey, being the Official Trading Card Manufacturer of the NFL Draft has its advantages).
This week, that hat has come full circle, making its way back to Chicago — albeit in pieces — as part of Panini America’s popular wrapper-redemption program for the 2015 National Sports Collectors Convention. Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury during his first minicamp practice with the Jaguars, Fowler’s upside remains sky high. But the prospects for one card in particular featuring a piece of the aforementioned Fowler-worn hat might be even higher.
Turns out there’s a “hole” new meaning, literally, to the HyperPlaid 1/1 version of Fowler’s Draft Hat card that features the holey piece of New Era hat that housed the hidden hat cam.
At some point this week in Chicago, one lucky collector will unearth that one-of-kind card at the Panini America booth. Here’s hoping after they know the full story behind it, they’ll have a “hole” new appreciation for it.
You can check out the card in its entirety below. We think you’ll find the NFL Fan Pass video to be must-see material, too.
