No Blarney, Ireland dumps Pakistan
From Jonathan Gaskin in Kingston, Jamaica
March 18, 2007 IRELAND has chosen St Patrick's Day to produce the greatest upset in World Cup history here today (AEDT).

It defeated mighty Pakistan by three wickets to send the 1992 champion, and one of game's undisputed superpowers, crashing out of the tournament.

The win for Ireland, made up mostly of part-timers and foreign imports, was secured when skipper Trent Johnston hit a huge six off Azhar Mahmood from the fourth ball of the 43rd over at Sabina Park.

The sensational win also came on St Patrick's Day and put Ireland on course to qualify for the second round Super Eights on its Cup debut.

Pakistan needed to win the Group D match after losing its opener to West Indies, while Ireland had already picked up a point from a dramatic last-ball tie with Zimbabwe.

But Ireland triumphed after a tense finale which had seen it lose 3-5 in seven balls as Pakistan threatened to pull off a great escape.

"We had a lot of confidence and knew that Pakistan would be short on confidence in the top order," said Kevin O'Brien, who finished unbeaten on 16.

"We knew if we got a few early wickets that we would have a chance." O'Brien's brother, Niall, one of the few full-time players in the team, top-scored with a magnificent and patient 72 off 107 balls.

Earlier, Johnston won the toss and put Pakistan into bat, and the decision paid rich dividends as Inzamam-ul-Haq's side was dismissed for 132 in 45.4 overs.

Boyd Rankin was the most successful Ireland bowler with 3-32 from nine overs. Andre Botha supported with the flattering figures of 8-4-5-2, and Kyle McCallan collected 2-12 from 5.4 overs.

Only four Pakistan batsmen got into double-figures - Kamran Akmal (27), Imran Nazir (24), Mohammad Yousuf (15) and Mohammad Sami (12).

The Ireland bowlers gained favourable bounce and movement from the hard, grassy surface, but the Pakistan batsmen were also victims of their own indiscretion and athletic fielding.

Defeat completes a torrid episode in Pakistan's cricket history. It arrived in the Caribbean without spearhead fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif who were injured having earlier bveen banned, then reinstated, after failign drug tests.

YES!!! This is great... the Pakistani's were a bit too cocky coming into world cup (especially one cricket writer) and now they are going home.... fantastic :D

Great news to see them leaving as they have some very explosive players if they get going. Now all we need is South Africa to bomb out and all will be well in world.;)

I consider New Zealand a greater threat to us, than SOuth Africa... not that I am not worried about the Proteas (because it would be just right they win so I get four years of crap from my south african friends)... I just think the team most likely to beat us is New Zealand.

Any idea why Afridi didn't play??? He's AWESOME to watch when he gets going... =D>

He was suspended for the 1st 2 games of the World Cup and a couple before that for an incident that occured recently ! (Can't remember what it was).

WELL DONE IRELAND !
