Wow. This thread certainly spiralled didn't it. I don't often read from Page 1 but this was well worth it.

Firstly, a few opinions on #thehobby (I actually had to write these down so I didn't forget them after 7 pages) :

1. Buckets. I get them (I get why people use them). I don't like to look through them because I find them hard to navigate and they are rarely priced. I also find them time consuming and hard to navigate, much the same way I find twitter. I much prefer a thread with scans (heavy if neccessary) and prices. Let me know if they are firm and I can have a discount for multiples and what the damage is on shipping. I find myself going through a well laid out thread a lot more thorough than one with a bucket or no prices. (Un)Fortunately, I also finding myself cards I don't neccessarily want/need, but that I like the look of (Patches/Autos/SP), that I will then go ahead and buy when I see the price and go "Yeah, that's reasonable."

2. Prices. You may have got the tone from the other one, but I need to see a price. It could be my previous retail background, but i'm much more likely to buy if something has a price. I understand some cards 1/1's High End cards are offer only jobs, but i'm sure most cards if you just through book price on it for a starting point may get you an additional bite or 2.

3. Market Price. A $50 card is only a $15 card if that's what people are willing to pay for it today. Yes it may be a low ball offer, I hate low ball offers, but that person may be serious about it. I've found myself in this position with some higher end Rondo's and I'm going to wait until the market matches what I want for the card.

4. Hold. Hold your cards. Goes off of market price. I'm selling cards at the moment out of season (Something I normally avoid doing as there is less of a buzz) because i'm trying to fund a case of Topps Five Star Football when it gets released soon. I know i'm not getting the prices that these cards COULD be worth, but if I need to sell now I get what I take. (This sounds a hell of a lot like my day job when I write that)

5. Trading. I've never done a trade since the mid 90s in the Golden Age when I blew my first Maccas paycheck on a 93-94 series 1 Locker box and a few packs of UD. Hit an Alonzo Mourning Flight Team in those packs and foolishly traded it away for Jordan base cards. Who didn't want Jordan right. (Side note, I bought the whole set of flight team for around $35 on ebay 2 years ago) Back to trading, it is just too difficult to trade when you are doing it by this means. If we were at a markets or cards day, trading could be the go. We both stand there with a beckett and see who needs to top up the trade. But when you are talking a Rondo Exquisite JSY vs a Lebron limited Patch who would trade when you could get $50 for it and go take your luck trying to get one cheaper. TRADING IS TOO HARD ON THE INTERNET. That is why I buy and sell.

6. Boxes. I bust boxes. I hope you've all seen my channel (Do I really hope that?) and know I've busted a lot of product over the years and have quite a bit more to go. I consider myself more of a set collector than say a PC collector (My Rondo is dwindling to Very High End only ATM). People have to bust boxes to get the singles out to the market. This #thehobby should be able to function with box-breakers/singles buyers and the hybrid (me) functioning in tandem. Not everyone has the "Cash" to do it. Times change. 3 Years ago I was flush and was busting a lot, life happens and things have to slow down. However, i'm out of the hibernation and the gas (Cash) tank is refilling itself so I can relive the fun that is busting boxes. If you aren't earning cash now/getting good trades/getting the right price WAIT IT OUT if you can. Life is cyclical. #thehobby is cyclical. Instead of buying $100 worth of PC cards if you only buy 1 a month, treat yourself to a box on your birthday. Record it for youtube, you never know, you might like it.

And now onto the music:

As someone who is now mid-30s who lived through the 80s. Those youtube vids brought back nothing but a shamed look across my face. That is not good music. I should suffix this by saying I do like One Directions new track. Don't hold it against me.

AJ, Stick with it. From what i've seen this thread has helped you out a bit. You never know, we may get another golden age when UD buy back in to the NBA (Jeez I hope that happens) and you wouldn't want to miss that. Having said that, If i had more courage to stick with the hobby after 96, I would've been busting through the original PMG era and could probably retired of all the mojo i'm sure I would've hit.

Sorry this was so long guys, but I love this hobby. I want people to know that not everyone is in it for the money, some do it for the thrills and satisfaction (Me) of opening boxes and completing sets.

haha I actually have a illiostomy, if thats how you even spell the damn thing!

Was close to quiting the hobby a few years back, but thanks to some of the great members on here, being stuck in hospital for 6 months wasn't as bad! Actually got me through the toughest time in my life!

To tangentalize further afield, been a great week on the film front for me went and saw Looper which was the best sci-fi flick I've seen since District 9, and finally caught The Raid: Redemption which kicked all kinds of ass.

I think the title on this thread should be changed to 'OZCTs Random Chat Thread' and it should be stickied
