Hi guys. Thought i'd discuss my opinions on Select and where i think they should go.
I'm not impressed at all with the last few years designs and choices. I'd bring back Future Force/Top Prospect, Jersey/Game Used, Club Player of the Year and some sort of AUTO cards that's not foil sigs. Scrap Sketches and Foil Sigs, not a fan of them. Gems are okay, but not the massive oversized heads, that's stupid. I like acetate cards but not the donkey kong style
Bring back simple classier designs like the older series, i really like the simple and clean approach. I think more inserts in general are good, maybe a team of the year or rep players of the year like older sets? I only collect Tigers but the older sets appeal to me more if i was collecting sets. Especially the 2003-2007 sets.
Yeah i dunno mate, I think they have flogged club player, team of the year and the daly m insert sets enough, time for something different, come up with some new insert sets.
i agree though about the game used and more autos, would like to see that for sure.
I do like the idea of the future force/top prospect, but they are usually pretty hit and miss, mostly miss if you look at past series. Maybe they should just pick 10 or 12 of the best up and comers as opposed to 1 from each club.
Im sick of whining about Select so im gonna do something different.......Give them praise I like the fact that they havent really flooded the market with autos and even the "nobodies" of Future Force/Top Prospects can still safely get $20 and Autograph Redemptions /100 usually get between $250-$400. When you look at overseas sports cards, for that sort of coin you can buy Autos of worldwide superstars and non-sport is the same.
As much as i dislike Select, they have protected the market, because if they wanted they could mass produce junk, flood the market then make most cards worthless. I also applaud them, for not taking the easy option and making Sticker Autos. I really cant stand sticker autos and they are a poor substitute for "on card" autos.
They do need new ideas and im sure Top Prospects will be back as they only left for the Centenary set (i think), but even then they are hit and miss and who comes up with the player selection each year are stupid. The players that they have missed in these sets (Future Force/Top Prospects 2001+) are better than the players they have included. They do need to adopt the AFLs Platinum versions numbered to 100 though.
Club Players of the Year, Team of the Year, Dally Ms, Foil Sigs, Sketches and Gems ARE ALL WHACK AND PLAYED OUT.
Seriously they have a full year each release to think of something new.
Yeah I dont like those gem things with the oversized heads either. Ive got a few signed, even the players think they look crap. Id love to see some game used memorabilia cards, and maybe a rep team subset with auto cards in them?
How about coach cards with pics lol.??
I'm assuming they're putting out a 2nd series as they always do this year, i'd like to see some improvement as 2009 Champions was terrible imo. Some of the choices for inserts was very poor (Withers Gem, seriously Select? Big mistake) and the foiled sigs and sketches look very average (i like the old sketch designs from 08,07) It's all opinion of course.
I'm hoping they lift their game, i'm assuming they make alot of money with their products so i hope they put more production values into the NRL series and come up with creative ideas.
Foldee80 mentioned that it would be best not to include club player, rep player etc and that top prospect and future force has been a dissapointment. I'd disagree, Tuaki, Farah and Marshall all have TP/FF and of course i'm biased but that's an awesome lineup for the Tigers right there. There's been some duds i agree but there's been some stars that got the treatment as well. And i love the idea of rep player, club player etc still. It's a nice addiction for club collectors like myself and i'm sure others who do the same.
Just my two cents, take it or leave it.
P.S The 'Donkey Kong' gem cards are great only for one reason, Mason and Cayless' massive heads are comical, and look at Priddis' from a few years back, very odd lol.
I used to love those cards they had in the mid ninties like the multiple image gards that yu move side to side they were redempion luv the redemption and the auto redemption and the antisapation of it comming in the mail iluved the ones where they were half super herocartoon the brett mullins one me fav i wish they would do some of these SUMO
