It seems fitting, really, that Colorado Rockies rookie sensation Trevor Story plies his trade at altitude. After all, with every captivating home run Story hits, his best Panini America trading cards keep climbing . . . and climbing . . . and climbing. So far during this young baseball season, Story has been the story.
During his first week in the majors, Story became just the fifth player in baseball history to homer in four consecutive games to start a season. With another dinger on Sunday, Story established a new mark for most home runs (seven) through the first six games of a career. Perhaps the only reason he didn’t hit another home run Monday? The Rockies didn’t play.
But at least the off day gave baseball collectors a chance to check their stash of cards from the 2011 season looking for a Story to tell . . . or sell.
In the span of a week, Story’s best Panini America cards from the 2011 product season, like the slugging shortstop on them, have come from out of nowhere to command the attention of fans and collectors alike. A copy of his 2011 Elite Extra Edition Baseball Prospects Autographs card sold for $99.99 on April 9. Three three weeks earlier, a copy of that card sold for just $11.95. One of Story’s 2011 Contenders Baseball Rookie Ticket Autographs sold on April 8 for $92.27. Less that one month earlier, a copy of the card sold for just $6.
