Official 2012 London Olympic Games thread.

Can't wait mate, going to be 2 weeks of bugger all sleep!

Keeping my eye on the swimming, athletics and road/track cycling. Hoping Channel 9 show most of the basketball as well. How I miss Foxtel right now :(

Yeah mate, VERY little sleep haha.

I'll be keeping an eye on Swimming, Tennis, Basketball & Usain Bolt lol That dude is ridiculous!

First chance of a medal could be in the Mens Road Race.

Hopefully some early breakaways can hurt the Brits and prevent them from winning the gold with Cavendish. Goss will be our best chance if there is a sprint finish.

Some surprises in the swimming so far. Phelps almost bombs out of the 400IM in qualifying 8th, and Park is DQ'ed in the 400m freestyle, might give Napoleon a chance at a medal!

Hopefully Rice has something left in the tank for the final, was not looking good for the first 300m of her heat.

4.25am wake up call, can't wait

Neither can I!!

God, I hope Steph wins another gold. I've been creepily in love with her since 2008 :p HUGE fan

Totally forgot about the opening ceremony, caught the end with the Hey Jude epic length version. Highlights looked great.

Can't wait for some Olympic action. Twitter is gonna be overloaded for a while, not by me but others. So much talk!!!

Was up at 5am to see Stephanie Rice place 6th in the 400m Individual Medley Final. Still doesn't look 100% since her shoulder injury last year.

Didn't swim must faster than her heat swim, gave it her all. Probably more of a chance in the 200IM.

First gold of the games goes to the womens 4x100m freestyle relay. Super result!

Yeah, I like her chances in the 200IM

She was right in it until the last 150m

Really really feel for Stephanie Rice - on one hand you have imbeciles like John Steffenson and Josh Ross moaning and whining at every opportunity and then Natalie Cook having a hissy fit about the flag carrying position...on the other hand Steph Rice was devastated after doing her best, saying that "I hope I haven't let too many people in Australia down". Class act, that one.

Get 'em in the 200IM mate, we are right behind ya!

Its either due to the fact its buried in the All Other Sports forum, or because of the poor effort so far

So many near misses, with Magnussan in the 100m freestyle and Seebohm in the 100m backstroke in the swimming. Possible golds in the medley relays for both the men and women, would be a good way to finish up the swimming.

Hoping for a few medals in the track cycling, boys did well in the Team Pursuit and Meares had some drama in the keiran final. Hoping she can back it up in the 500m time trail in a couple of days.

Glad the athletics has now started. 100m heats tonight so we get a first look at Bolt, hoping he is injury free. Watt has a great chance in the long jump and Dani Samuals is throwing her best all year in the discus, possible medals in both of them.

Women are looking good in the basketball after their first up loss, should make a medal game easily. Men not so much, played better against the Chinese however will have to play much better to have a shot at a medal (If they still have a chance)

Come on Aussies, lets get some gold on the board!

This thread is quiet....

Also probably quiet because Ch9's coverage is woeful, simulcasting the same feed on two channels, and switching between events like a hyperactive child. People with Foxtel/Austar are spoilt for choice.

I don't know why they can't just run one of the team sports on GEM, such as the basketball or hockey, and switch between the individual events on the main channel.

The media reporting has also been disgusting. Call the loss in the men's relay "our greatest swimming disaster" is over the top, and as I saw someone say on Twitter, I'm sure Harold Holt would disagree. Saying Anna Meares was "obliterated" or "blown away" in the Keirin, casts such a negative tone. Seeing Seebohm in tears after finishing second is really distressing, so much pressure has been placed upon such young athletes who have never been tested at this level.

It wasn't so long ago, in Atlanta '96, that Australia didn't win a gold medal in the pool until the very last day of competition.

As an aside, I have to laugh at US news websites that list the medal tally by total medals as opposed to just the gold. They honestly think they topped the table in Beijing even though China had 15 more gold than them.
