I started designing cards back in '96 but of course those were all sketches in my notebook. Fast forward to 2010, after I had been away from the hobby for 12 years and saw the monstrosities that Panini was then churning out, I really had to take to designing again. Anyway in the site linked above are my designs from 2010-11 to present. I am by no means a graphics artist and do this purely for fun.

By the way if you click on the MBC Majestic link you can see a scan of a physically printed card of one of my designs that a fellow collector sent to Landry Fields to sign. My only lame claim to fame haha!

Some nice ideas in there. I think some of them are just a little overdone with the effects and photoshopping. Should put more focus on the players and keep them a little cleaner to draw attention to production quality rather than printed effects. Good starting points though :)

Alas that is where the problem lies. It's hard to emulate printing technology like refractors and foil etching on 2d objects :) thanks for the constructive criticism though. Would you be able to point out some designs (not necessarily mine) that you've always liked? Cheers

Panini should hire you considering their uninspiring inserts at times that look the same. Prizm inserts all look the same, same goes for Crusade with their autos and jsy cards. Everything is either all white or all silver. Don't like all of the designs, but some nice ones in there. The Stellar insert looks like its right from 1996.

Try not to let Photoshop limitations impact your designs (such as not being able to show foil). Just come up with nice designs and let us use our imaginations on the finishing I guess. :) A simple design, if you put it on a nice background and make it look kind of "real" will look better than a really busy flat design.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
To be honest with you @Fleer57 I'm not sure I understand your sentiments when you say "A simple design, if you put it on a nice background and make it look kind of "real"" A simple design put on a nice background? Do you mean a full bleed photo instead of player cutouts? Or something maybe akin to your avatar there of the '86 Fleer release? If you had to use an existing card design as a basis of what you're describing which one would it be? Cheers.

no sorry i wasn't talking about the card design background, i was meaning just for presentation purposes, putting your entire card design onto a nice background can make it look nicer and give it more of a 3d look.

Like these - they make stationery designs look amazing just by putting them onto a background and giving them some shadows etc..

That way, if you care design is very clean and simple, you wont leave the viewer thinking it's too plain. The simple design will stand out nicely.

Imagine if you saw a Flawless design as a flat image, on a white background. Yawn... put it on a nice background and you have more contrast and you can almost feel the card in hand.

I'm only talking presentation here really. Presentation makes simplicity stand out.

Ohhhh. So you're saying if I use my existing designs and present them in a pseudo 3D way it'll be even better? So as it is the designs are ok? Btw I'm not a fan of the Flawless design myself but that's obviously personal preference :D

nice work! the flash bang, reboot and brand new heavies are the stand outs for me.
i like your prime time design but it gave me sore nuts looking at them
