No contract for Hardwick

I honestly hate these opinion pieces, they are completely one sided and are often written specifically to cause a reaction (not saying this one is specifically or not, just generalising here). Unfortunately this is how the media seems to be going these days, all you need to do is watch 15 minutes of the cricket to hear opinions on what Australia/West Indies are doing wrong, despite how poorly or well they are going, how the last shot/ball was stupid and that if the commentators were playing it would have been a perfect decision and a wicket/boundary every ball. I'm sick of it, I turn off most commentary on sport now, Ray Warren is about the only person I will leave it on as he is one of Australia's best imo.

As for Hardwick, I dont profess to know everything about him, however I work with 2 hardcore Richmond supports who have both been members for 20+ years and they believe he is one of the best things that has happened to the club. The plan that he and the board set out with in 2010 was to reach 75,000 members (done), play in 3 finals series (done) and have 0 debt (done) in 5 years, now they also wanted to achieve 3 premierships within 10 years & that might be a bit of a stretch, but to say that Hardwick doesn't deserve an extension because his players haven't won a finals game is just completely ignorant. At least in my opinion.

Which comes back to why I hate these types of articles, being opinion pieces really gets on my nerves and more often shows the lack of research and thought that has gone into the article than the point the author was trying to make which simply brings down my opinion of the article.

I was going to say something, but then I remember this is the guy that does nothing but post links to his own articles. ;)

Maybe its just me but I bugs me when people use this place as a platform for self promotion and don't contribute in any other way.

I think in the last ten years or so - certainly now in the "social media" age - the culture of journalism has changed noticeably. There is an almost perverse delight in criticism. Let's never forget: bad news rates, good news doesn't.

I have never accepted the theory that the amount of money a person earns should be commensurate with the amount of criticism, abuse and ridicule they receive. This goes for a senior AFL coach as well as a Prime Minister, for that matter.

I was listening to an interview between Kerry O'Keeffe and respected journalist Mike Coward on the weekend - my God it highlighted how times have changed. In those days the "press pack" (as well as the bloody commentary box!) was much smaller and journalists built a rapport with players.

We now live in the world of the instant opinion and I think the general view is that "something" is better than "nothing" when it comes to competing with other newspapers, television networks, radio stations and websites.
