Can they just F off and let the game prosper, this game has been bashed from pilar to post and it still outrates (PAY TV) all other sport in Australia imagine If it could control it's own destiny....

News won't rule out another rebel comp

NEWS LTD is refusing to guarantee it will not start another Super League war because of uncertainty over the future of broadcast rights.

While News has offered to sign a non-compete clause for five years after its exit from the game, the Rupert Murdoch-owned media company will not guarantee that it will never form a Super League-type breakaway competition again.

Murdoch's rebel competition in 1997 generated content for Fox Sports, as he did not have the broadcast rights to any major sports at the time pay television was introduced in Australia.
Story continues below News has been granted the first and last rights of refusal on pay-television rights until 2027 as part of the deal to hand over control of the game to an independent commission, but the stand-off over the terms of the non-compete clause has become one of the major delays to the formation of the new body.

The ARL and NRL clubs have rejected News Ltd's five-year offer as being worthless, as there are no genuine pay-television rivals likely to bid when the new broadcast rights deal is negotiated by the independent commission.

However, after the next five-year deal the landscape could change significantly - as has already been indicated by Telstra's $30 million-a-year deal with the AFL to stream all matches live on mobile phones and tablets, and broadcast one match per week live to its T-Box set-top box customers.

According to a recent report on Australian sports rights compiled by Goldman Sachs analysts, the introduction of the National Broadband Network will create new opportunities. ''The Australian television viewing landscape is undergoing a transformation,'' the report says.

''Technology is driving this transformation - the digitisation of media has enabled content delivery across multiple platforms.''

They big problem we have in our game is a lack of strong leadership. No one has the balls to deal with these issues head on. We have teams that get away with anything because their chairman is on the Nrl board, we have a guy working at the Roosters that actively helped the storm systematically rort the salary cap, we have a player manager been accused of being involved in fixing part of a game, we have another club at war in the media with David Gallop. It's a joke. You don't see this rubbish go on in afl.

Until we have leadership that is going to stand up and be counted this sort of rubbish will continue.

It's a strange request to ask someone to sign a non compete clause, generally they are signed with some form of incentive and or compensation and the NRL aren't offerring any commercial reasoning behind the request.

Given that the NRL does not guarantee they wont sell the games media rights to a News competitor I am not surprised News are questioning the logic behid the request. If I was a shareholder of News I certainly would not be in favour of them signing one for any unreasonable length of time as it makes no commercial sense.

Note I am completley in favour of the IC and not a supporter of News and just want it done but I can't see the logic in this demand from the clubs, if all 16 clubs agree why don't they just sign a loyalty agreement never to form part of another league and this would effectively knock their concerns on the head.

Cheers
Ross

They do have a right of last refusal with the tv rights that goes to up until something like 2024. Know what your saying but it just seems like a stupid point to get stuck on. Reading between the lines they might be trying to use this as leverage to get there own way on something. Who knows - i just wish they would stop holding the game back and get on with it.
