Hi I'm a new member, actually acting behalf of my 8 year old son. My son wanted to start collecting AFL football cards so I relented and bought him the starter album for the Champions series. I started to become engrosed in it myself as we tried to collect all the cards in the set. We have all the common and foil stamped cards and most of the signature cards. I was in the Cards Zone shop buying cards whe I spoke to another customer who told me about this website. So here we are and hope to be able to trade some cards

Welcome Liz but heres ya 1st mistake

"I was in the Cards Zone shop buying cards"

Never buy from Card Zone they are a bloody ripoff......... I'm sure you will find all the AFL you can handle here at very reasonable prices for you and your son, and be able to trade your doubles for what you need. Stay away from Card Zone :) eBay is much much much cheaper.

Cheers and welcome Cal

Hi there, i'm a recent newbie here too, welcome!

collecting cards is heaps fun, opening a pack of cards is always exciting, not knowing what's inside, the thrill of buying a pack for a few $ and pulling out a card worth $1000
is an unforgettable experience and so worth the few $ ;)

I tend to disagree slightly about card zone, sure compared to ebay and perhaps trading here, card zone may be expensive for things, but card zone is a retailer, and the bottom line is, without that shop, the card collecting hobby would of been dead and buried long ago.

in the late 90's when all the wholesalers were dumping product, that shop bought out all that stock, futera, dynamic, tempo and all the wholesalers, he took massive risks, hocked himself silly to do it, house, loan sharks, the lot to maintain the prices and thus give exsisting collectors hope for there own collection, imagine if no one bought out all that stuff, it would all be on the market and worthless, so too would our own collections.

how do you know eba0y is cheaper? because you guage from the retail price no?

if anything the bigger dealers on eBay are killing the hobby, or have they already? they bust 50+ cases per series, make their money back on the big ticket items, then dump the basic stuff at throw out prices, team sets 99c, common sets $10-$15
if they lose on the series, it's a tax ride off as most have primary biznesses elsewhere.

Kinda makes it hard to justify buying a few packs from newsagents ect and building a set when they are practically worthless on the secondary market, card zone helps to balance that out.

I'm no great fan of card zone myself, for different reasons, and for what is to come.
But you gotta give the guy credit, after all he ran a crappy little milk bar and started off with half a case of cards in '93 to become one of the biggest card shops in the world!
forget what you see in the shop, there are warehouses full of card zone stock :)
card zone is THE major influence in how and what is now produced and marketed in aust'

So I don't disagree that card zone is expensive and in many cases a rip off compared to the secondary market, but without stevey boy, we'd all still be collecting yowies :)

But yeah, trading is heaps fun too, swapping doubles to complete your set is such a bonus, i'd suggest buying your packs from anywhere you want, have fun and if you want to go for the special type cards, buy off eBay, but first give yourself the chance to experience pulling the special cards out yourself, simply buying cards on their own can get pricey as no one is gonna sell you a card worth $1000 for $4 on ebay :)

My advice to you is to let your young tacka enjoy footy cards for what they are, don't put any emphasis on value appart from calling an insert card a special or hard to get card, teach him to appreciate cards for what they are, and not on what it could be worth and your kid will love card collecting forever.
read through this forum, especially the basketball category, quickly you will notice the main emphasis is put on the value, someone pulls a card and says "hey look what I just pulled" answers to follow will be along the lines of "cool.. that's worth $40" this is not card collecting, if your in this hobby for the money then save it and buy your kid blue chip shares :)

sorry, going on again :)

collect what you enjoy .. enjoy what you collect

You Obviously Know Steve and thats fine but I just don't think anyone can justify his prices, I have nothing against him personally just what he charges.

Just 2 things.

1. "Kinda makes it hard to justify buying a few packs from newsagents ect and building a set when they are practically worthless on the secondary market, card zone helps to balance that out."

?? Thats nice of him Overcharging drastically to balance the market out "what a guy" :)

2. "But you gotta give the guy credit, after all he ran a crappy little milk bar and started off with half a case of cards in '93 to become one of the biggest card shops in the world!"

?? Biggest card shops in the world? lol thats funny, Maybe in Australia. And there is really no competition in Australia anyway, which is why he can charge what he charges.

Guess it's just about being comfortable about where you purchase your cards from.

Edit : But I do agree 100% with your last paragraph Ian on the emphasis on value of cards, and Liz allowing him at a young age to really enjoy how collecting cards should be enjoyed, without the emphasis on prices.

Thanks Ian

Cheers Cal

lol :)

for #1 retail is simply retail, eBay is an auction site, I have sold many cards worth $1 for $10 on ebay because that's what the buyer was willing to pay, retail is set so in some cases it can be cheaper

#2 it is, you just can't see it from the outside looking in.
when there were 4 card zones you may of thought different, but as mentioned, it's what you can't see that would probably blow your mind.

glad though that you agree with everything else :)

It's Ben :)
you must have me confused with someone else?

Must have :) sorry ben

and I was around in the early cadzone days use to goto the one in the city weekly :) Double BV was the standard selling price :) although the Aussie $ was at about 64c U.S :)

Sorry again for the name confusion.

Cal

i tend to agree with cal here, although i was in card mania in geelong the other week on my way to melb, and i normally buy a few packs of the latest stuff, ive known the guys down there for quite a few years,so i asked how much was the box of spgu on the shelf and he came back with $550:mad: thats about $91 a pack, considering i paid $180 from a member here just 4 days earlier!

happy collecting guys! and welcome

cheers

lol, hey no probs, you should see what they call me in other forums :)
oh yeah, heh, I remember the double book value days :)

and don't get me wrong, I can't stand the bugger to tell you the truth.
once I challenged his tactics at a card show, was full on, they ended the fair early that day :)
he will stop at nothing to get his way, only reason to get select distributorship was to stick it up all other wholesalers and to further control the market as now he knows exactly where the competition is and what it's up too, it's a master plan that will see him hold select itself at ransom in 3 years and he'll own it outright aswell as every sport card licence in oz.

hey.. talking cards again is fun :) been too long

omg! what on earth is spgu? are they like scratch and lick cards laced with cocaine or something? any spares you wanna offload? :p
that sure is a big difference there, they obviously don't adjust to market prices, but in a way I do feel for them 'cos if they pay $300 wholesale and the value drops dramatically, it would make it awfully tough for a biz to sell at a 1/3 of what they had to pay to stock them.
personally I've always had a gripe with card mania as at the back they are a wholesaler and out front they retail, no middle man, huge profits, and being a promo card collector, which they get 1000's free per series, sell some at unreal prices, but glad to hear there still alive and kickin'

Always happy to talk cards mate but we should probably move it to the card discussion forum, we are saturating poor Liz's Introduction thread :)

Hey guys, nice discussion - mind if I move it into it's own thread?

Welcome to the site Liz and Jackson! Hope you find many footy cards you like here! :)
