After much abuse from Dr Curlytek about being a tight ass I parted with $45 and got a LG DVD burner as with the new NBA season and my ultra fast broadband I really did need it.

Now what media do I use?? I had a few discs from people that didnt' work last season but the majority of them work.

There is - and + with - being cheaper it seems.

Can you guys recomend a brand and type to pick up here in Melb?? Would make it a whole lot easier.

The TDK spindles of 50 at $39 seem like a decent deal but JB and Strathfield etc might have better and cheaper deals that will still work on the DVD player.

+ & - should be around about the same price it all depends what your burner can use and also what format/s your DVD player will play...

With Panasonic stuff (which most of mine is) DVD-R works the best

Your burner should be listed as what format it will burn on for eg: DVD-RW (means DVD -R and -RW rewritable) or DVD+- R or whatever...

hope that helps

if u need any other help shoot me a PM

My burner is multi format so it does
DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW

As for the player its played verbatin, princo and other discs fine so I shouldn't have any probs I rekon.

I guess I'll just get a cheap pack of 5-10 discs and give it a go as I did notice the - was usually cheaper and easier to get.

Thanks Matty.

The three brands I'd recommend are:
Ritek
Databank
Taiyo Yuden

DVD-R is the most common format and your dvd player is more likely to play them.

it can be a bit hit and miss with some dvds as they vary in quality different lasers read them differently, for example my xbox is very picky with what it reads, it only likes dvds with dark ink. I had 3 philips dvds last week that it could only read intermittedly and as soon as i put it on databanks perfect every time.

be wary of Princo discs they have a fairly high failure rate (I believe they have gotten better in recent times)

hey chad 50 for $39 bucks is quite expensive try princo as billy said i buy mine at laverton market for $18 for 50 disc. am sure victoria market has some of those as well.

Now I did say I could have sent you a Burner...

Anyways.

We use the blank (no label) ones from Chickenfeed. We're not overly fussed about the price, $9.99 on special.... (spool of 50).

When burning movies, not that anyone does it, DVD+R will get you a better quality result.

It's best to try out blank singles, to see what works best for you. If you do copies of the Mavs games for me, I'm sure I'll get it to work one way or another.... LOL.

Ok and turning games on realplayer to DVD for my own enjoyment is done how? Nero is telling me I need to use Nerovision etc??

Do I need some secondary program to do this??

And yeah Scotty you mentioned it AFTER you got rid of the the DVD burner remember! LOL ahh well I got the black one I wanted and $45 aint going to break the bank.

just don't forget to get 16x if ur dvd writer supports it.

- and + doesn't really matter since nowadays all the dvd writers are all supported.. it was just technology war at the early age.

i bought 16x philips 50 discs for $24-25 at any msy shops.
msy offers quite reasonable and never had a single problem with burning DVD with any brand..

hope this helps

Aha, yes, it's true.

but if your system supports enough buffer to be run, you can actually burn it at full speed (half the time), for example, if your computer system is pentium 4 with 512mb ram using reliable program or better (of course, there are a few more things to consider such as cache, buffering, BUS speed, USB variation if external burner, HDD transfer and connectivitity including HDD buffer and some HW/SW tweaks), basically you can actually burn at full speed.. but it's good to avoid fast speed if you are not too sure about ur system..

The reason i stated i never had problem burning at any DVD-R is to utilise what your computer can do and what you can do.. usually it's not DVD-R problem, because they all are basically the same even the names are different.. you will be amazed to realise that half of the blank DVDs are the same...

For example, all the chinese brand DVD players are using same chips as SONY DVD players use.. it's just a name and ISO standarizations when it comes to law... the rest is pretty much the same...

Also don't forget burning at higher speeds means higher risk of failure or data corruption.

I'm using VSO - ConvertXtoDVD.

Works for most formats. Although some of the latter stuff I've gotten I needed an upgraded.

And I think I f-cked up when I said I had it.... I still have it.. so if ya still need it.

I can send ya some programs if ya need Chaddles...
