Hi guys,

For my mates out there. Please join this page. Is a very good mate of mine who I went through the Army with, served his country proud in Afghanistan and finished his 4 years service. Did everything right with discharge and went overseas to do security/counter terrorism course to come back and be arrested for going AWOL as his papers had not been submitted but actually lost. Another great fuck-up for our soldiers, another kick in the teeth. He is now looking at a charge of 54 days going AWOL and is looking at a minimum sentence of 28 days in Holsworthy Military Prison.

Sorry Brett.....can't support this one. A serviceman who puts his paperwork in and does not check on what happening with it then leaves the country whilst on leave, for whatever reason, thinking all will be fine is nieve to say the least.

There are many steps to the separation process that cannot be overlooked by either the ADF or the member. So he will just have to do his time.

Dont think he was nieve mate, one of the better guys and soldiers I've worked next to. Its the shit pogs that we have serving in the Army who have lost his paperwork which he had submitted all before going to South Africa to do the Ronin course. Things are not like they used to be when you served.

Brett I retired from the ADF in 2010 as a FSGT (WO2 equivelant) after 24 years service. I know what is required for a member to separate from the ADF, there are discharge medicals, discharge dental, meeting with the DVA advocate, security clearance debrief and official secrets paperwork to be signed, unit and base clearances, public clothing to be returned and the list rolls on. Also it is a members responsibility to ensure his leave has been approved........what about the paperwork with a unit security representative for O/S travel whilst on approved leave?

In addition, the discharge process will generate a posting signal for the member from their unit to the discharge cell and also the creation of the certificate of service for the member.

As a service Policeman I sent many men and women to DFCE and all claimed they were either hard done by or the system let them down.

You dont need to tell me Dave, I was in the service and got discharged. Regardless what rank you were and corp you were in. He submitted all paperwork and did all clearances before he left on war leave.

Unit security rep I cant vouch for but all were done. Were you based in Townsville?

No I transitioned thru TVL a few times whilst heading O/S. I finished my service at RAAF Base Amberley. It would appear then you are saying his discharge was not a problem and went smoothly but his war leave was not processed/approved?

Thought you might have known my brother he was pretty famous up there. Known as JJ or Sgt Saint. Was based out of recon but you werent involved with grunts.

No his discharge wasnt a problem as he was told yes when overseas in the Ghan, his war leave was alos approved but believe paperwork not processed before lost. He had not heard anything for 3 weeks into his course in Sth Africa that he was AWOL. Seems like a big stuff up from the ranks and someone will get their arses handed to them over it.

Well if the leave application was a paper form and was recommended and approved but not entered into PmKeyS then it seems your mate is a victim of circumstance. At the time of my discharge in 2010, all leave applications were initiated by the member and recommended / approved online thru PmKeyS. Unless something pops up to aid in his defence before the Summary Authority then he may just end up doing his time.
