I'd definitely have to say Baseball and football would be the most popular - Football to watch, baseball to collect. NHL really lost its appeal after the lockout that cost it two entire seasons. The NBA is more popular than nhl (ice hockey), but with two lockouts/labor disputes in 13 years.... yeah.
In regards to watching a baseball game live at the stadium - i've been told by an american that unless you are stoned or drunk (or both) it is like watching pain dry. And this was an american speaking. I've watched a few minutes of MLB games on foxtel and I would believe it - watching a five day cricket test match is more exciting.

LOL before even reading this post I was gonna mention that episode from the Simpsons where Homer is at the game and he's not drinking for some reason and says something like "I never realized how boring this game was without beer"
Dunno how people can like Baseball or NFL over BBall TBH....... tried watching Baseball awhile back and it was pretty boring and tried watching NFL and I found there was far too many stoppages and I got bored too LOL
To have this answered by an American, Professonally, Football is by far the most popular to watch but because there are not very many games compared to baseball, baseball is overall viewed more than football. College basketball is more popular than NBA as far as spirit. Then yes, lonely hockey and everything else. Cards, baseball is the most common because there are so many players, teams and games plus, it is just a classic sport! then Football at a close second then basketball.
I went to a couple of baseball games here in Australia many many many years ago and found it boring as bat ****. Have tried watching a few games here and there but also found watching it boring.
In terms of funnest to watch Ice Hockey would have to be up there it's a crazy sport sadly the collecting market is very small for Hockey. And alot of people don't like the violence. So yeah between Baseball and NFL I guess.
Even when i put some money on a few baseball games i ended up falling asleep. Same with Golf and i'd probably fall asleep during a tennis match too if they weren't groaning so loud everytime they hit the ball.
Watching NFL is no problem for me. no offense to the American's here, but NFL (Gridiron) is just a dumbed-down, soft version of Rugby League. and if you can follow the League, you can definitely follow NFL.
