If you come out South East Melbourne kiwis house is always worth a look for a couple of quiet crownies lol if you get a chance check out the MCG and the sports museum i was pretty impressed when i went late last year. Dont forget to have a walk around the airport when you land as we found a heap of brouchere things with discounts to about 90% of the sights in Melbourne very handy
Thanks guys some great places suggested and i just wish i could have more time to see them all as some opening hours clash with other scheduled parts of the trip. Can't wait!
Really depends on how far out of Melbourne you can travel and what your interests are. 12 Apostles in Apollo Bay is about 3 hours from Melbourne, Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is about 1 hour away from the CBD.
There is the Tutankhamun exhibition at the Melboure Museum from April 8 onwards if you are into that sort of thing.
As for card shops, there is one at the Dandenong Market on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Is also at Caribbean Gardens in Ferntree Gully on Fridays and Sundays i believe. Has plenty of non-sport there i believe (although i don't buy any)
If you do the MCG tour, buy the ticket which combines the Tour AND the Museum entrance. I didn't BUT in a non-cash grab way that most Sydney operators would do, the MCG person just charged my father-in-law and I the extra $10 and gave us the other ticket. Joked people always do it anyway. If you are a sporty, put aside 2-3 hours for the museum, though the AFL is lavishly looked after wheres at NRL is about as big as the monitor you are looking at now. Plenty of Cricket and Olympics gear too. Brilliant and worth it.
Get to the MCG or Etihad for a game. If you don't support an AFL team, anyone will do. Etihad was great when I was there.
Take the City Circle tram ride. It is free.
I liked St Kilda too. Cafes, beach, tram ride. Simple but good.
If you're in to comics, the service here is wonderful... Comics 'R' Us The one at WINDSOR but it's on Chapel St.
JB HiFi Bourke Street also if you are a music person. Has ALL the back catalogue and box sets and collectables so sadly missing from all the Sydney JB Hi Fi outlets. A proper JB Hi Fi, like when they started. Heaps of stock, heaps of depth. Sadly, still the same "my s#it doesn't stink and I'm an artist darling so don't bother me too much" customer service, LOL. But hey, when it comes to CDs, I don't give a **** about the art school drop outs serving me.
Have fun. I love the place after we drove down there Xmas Day for the Boxing Day Test and spent the week down there. Central, good shops, easy to get around.

Wow thanks for such a detailed report
Dont think i can do the whole sport thing this time around but will try to get out to St Kilda, Royal Exhibtion Building + others.
haha i think that description is dead on about the customer service at JB.
Around Dandenong, you can try and not get stabbed and robbed for one thing
Seriously, there isnt much else to do in Dandenong. There is a place called Heritage Hill -http://www.greaterdandenong.com/documents.asp?ID=306&Title=Heritage+Hill
