Former professional basketball star Luc Longley, his family and his children's friends escaped a fire which gutted his $2 million house at Fremantle, fire authorities say.

The blaze started about 3am (AWST) on Saturday at Longley's house in Montreal Street in the port suburb of Perth.

Longley, his partner, his two children and their two friends escaped without injury, a Fire and Emergency Services Association (FESA) spokesman said.

The sports star is being hailed as a hero, but lost much of his sporting memorabilia.

The converted industrial premises was well alight by the time fire crews arrived.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within one hour but the $2 million property was left gutted, the FESA spokesman said.

Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to Longley's adjacent car park which houses up to five vehicles.

FESA and police arson teams are investigating the incident but are not treating the cause of the fire as suspicious.

The 218cm-tall former star spent 10 years playing for a number of basketball teams in the US National Basketball Association (NBA) and also played for the Australian team.

He played for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s with basketball legend Michael Jordan, who helped the team win three consecutive NBA championships.

man that is sad to hear, i hope he was able to save some his sporting memorabilia, because some of that Chicago Bulls stuff would be priceless.

sport stuff aside i think family photos etc are more important (after his family ofcourse).
I can just picture him saying "oh no my bulls jersies/trophies/autographed mj rookie card and his wife saying are you freakin nuts"
bad news for the longleys, hope he has insurance.

Just saw him on the news...he said he lost EVERYTHING ! He said no-one was hurt so it is not a tragedy but more of a bummer !

It's sad to think he lost all those mementoes :(

Maybe we could all put a care package together for the big guy to help him out with some collectables he can put in his new place when its built.

very interesting idea :) , imagine him opening a pack from ozcards members with a few of his and his team mates cards .

I'm sure this news will get back to Mr. Jordan somehow and he will do something about replacing all that priceless memorobilia that I'm sure would have been stashed. Really, really unfortunate..

damn that sucks! imagine what would've been in his tropy cabinet etc!

maybe the Bulls franchise can arrange to get some things sent over! as like, sort of replacements.

Yeah, saw this on ESPN. Apparently his rings were inside too.

It also said his girlfriend, not his wife, so I think he's seperated.
