Looking for a Master Set chase!

Hey OCT,

Don't really do this very often, asking what sets are good to complete. But I just got a special request, wondering if you guys could give me some ideas of a master set to chase. I initially didn't want to do this, had 10-11 Classics in mind but then I realised that the variations didn't really have much of a variation to them.

Got this set on the list at the moment: 2007-08 UD Chronology
Would like thoughts on that as well

The criteria I'm after:

• nothing Panini, no offence but the variations aren't variations, the numbering isn't standard in many of the variations and too many stickers for my liking in a master set
• nice looking base (love my base )
• some nice inserts too
• a good mix of autos/patches and jerseys, not an overload though (which ruled out 08/09 SP Rookie Threads)
• something mid-range
• preferably with a decent rookie class

Feel free to throw ideas at me and I'll have a look at them
Thought about the 86-87 Fleer Rookie set but as a younger collector, I don't see as much sentimental value in this players and cards as many others would.

09/10 Upper Deck Basketball is pretty sweet IMO

^yep was bout to say the same my self, 09/10 upper deck is a great set. ive done the master set minus any auto's/gu's. its a great set. plus there lebron, jordan etc autos in the signature collection to track down.

07/08 Hot Prospects has a nice 60 card base set (including mj) also has rookie patch autos and some cool numbered inserts, draft classes year with 3 players numbered to the year of the draft and some legend insert sets. Also had a different auto subset and auto material and auto patch levels of inserts... Still one of my all time favourites, let me know if you like as I think I have a spare base and insert sets around..

Will have a look at the autos, I know the inserts and base are pretty good. Have a inkling that those autos are sticker though. Am I right?

Yeh 07/08 and 08/09 HP were both really really nice! I have the base set and most of the inserts already but same issue, all the Rookie Autos are sticker? Is the Draft postmarks also part of HP?

I would just suggest that you keep in mind that although you are saying 'not panini', anything too old is going to make your life so much harder because of availability!! Even with panini's 10/11 sets its getting harder to find stuff because people are breaking less!

Ah good point, would probably stick to something 2007/08 and newer then?

Yeah, wouldnt go any earlier!! Even 07/08 isn't busted that often and would be harder than current stuff.
If Panini is out, what about SP Authentic or Ultimate? Not a fan?? I don't know much about them, but I do like the Home Court autos and the Manufctured Jersey autos!

Too many sticker autos in both. And not too big of a fan of manufactured stuff. Also no patches

I gotta be picky for this set chase, because I hope to be still chasing it after many years.

Haha you'll eat your words in a month. I've got 2 set pretty sick set chases almost to completion

Chronology sounds awesome, I wanted to start that one up earlier but it is just out of my reach in terms of cash. Now its hard to find that out there as it has been awhile. Do card shops still sell them? I havent seen any though...

Yepp DaCardWorld still has sealed cases for sale. I would say it's a bit out of my range at the moment as well but I'm anticipating a chase of at least 4-5 years even if I did have the cash. I could probably do the base set /250 and the rookies /299 right now as well as the Dual GUs but most of the rest should come after I graduate from uni

How about 11/12 SPA?

Yeh Adam raised that one. Too many stickers and it doesn't even have all the rookies. It also has a few Jordans and Lebrons and I figured if I needed to get them anyway I'd rather get them in a better looking set.
