I got a couple job interviews in Melb and well I wanted to ask a few things about living there.

1. If I am working in the city what are decent suburbs within walking distance to the public transport? How long does it take to get to the CBD from there? Is it tram or train? I was thinking of renting a three bedroom home around 350-500 a week. I could settle for 2 bedroom (meaning I don't bring all my stuff with me) for $300-350 a week.

2. Can you get cheap living in the city? I know some hotels rent out two bedroom apartment anyone know how much these are?

3. What is a decent livable wage in Melb?

4. How much is public transport in Melb?

Public transport in Melbourne is fantastic, just depends on how long you want to travel every morning for.
Housing depends if you want to share or not. I ws paying $340 per week in fairly new 2 bedroom place in Ringwood (about a 45 minute train ride to the city). I now live in Richmond (10 minutes on the tram to CBD) but pay more.
This site is fantastic - Viclink Journey Planner - Your guide to public transport in Victoria
That site gives exact details (bus, train, tram, walk) of how to get anywhere in Vic.

No idea, obviously the closer to the city you get the more expensive the rent.

3. What is a decent livable wage in Melb?
Unhelpful I know but depends on your quality of living.

4. How much is public transport in Melb?

Depends on the zone, and how many you buy (bulk cheaper) but a daily Zone 1 ticket is $6.80

Best city in the world.

Where to live depends on where you are working i guess. Assuming the city then I rent a 3 1/2 bedroom place in the West, Maidstone which is only 15 mins from city on train. West is a bit cheaper but has a bad reputation. This is changing though. You would be doing well to find a 3 bedroom place within 10kms of the city for your price. But the transport is great, buses and trams and trains really can take you from anywhere to anywhere in Melbourne.

ok thanks for the feedback. I was thinking staying on the east side somewhere between Richmond and Dandenong and Franskton the furthest.

Mainly because if i switch job in the future a lot of the power utilities are in the eastern suburbs.

1) How much is a 2 bedroom home in Richmond or close to? For rent. Does it have a small back yard or anything?

I ask this because I have a dog I would love to take with me so I will need to find a property that allows pets.

Ideally I would probably just buy a house, but I don't know how stable these new jobs will be (assuming I get one)

yes I am expecting 350-400 for a 3 bedroom maybe like 40-50kms out. How long would it take a train to get to CBD from say Clayton or Mt Maverly.?

If I go closer to CBD it be Richmond the closest I would stay not right in CBD, maybe Rosenna for $350-$370 MAX 2 bedroom with pets allowed. Or anywhere on the east side approx 20kms out MAX.

Just did a search on realestate.com.au for Richmond, under $400 and pets allowed - 0 results
The place I am in is a townhouse with no backyard, 3 beds, 2 bath, 1 offstreet car park, - roughly $350 pw (we own)

You've given yourself a fairly big range (Rich-Dandenong) and should be able to easily find something you like in your price range.
The further out = cheaper
but
The further out = longer train rides

Hey man i moved from nz early last year like everyone else says awesome move, We live in Springvale/ Mulgrave close to clayton train takes about 20 - 30 mins into the cbd. our rent is $320 a week for a newly renovated 2 bedroom place with lots of yard space etc.

We normally train on the weekends to the city and can get a 5 weekend pass for $15. not sure what the week day rate/bulk rate is but i could look into it for you if you wanted.

WHat inner suburbs are livable in Melb?

St Kilda seems to have a few nice places. How is the suburb? Also any other suburb recommendations?

congrats

GL with the move

thanks mate. Still not sure if I want to go out to suburbs or stay in inner suburbs.

Hence why the question about quality of St Kilda.
