Hey yall, quick little story. I'll start with 2 quick questions for yall...
1. When you were 5, who were the best (with hindsight) rookie draftees that year?
For me it's the '84 draft freaks: Hakeem, MJ, Barkley, Stockton.
2. Would you have loved it if your parents got you a bunch of RC's or cool bball cards for Christmas and Bday gifts, even if they were cheapies?
So on Christmas morning, my kid opens up a little presentation box that had in it:
1. DRose base Prizm refractor
2. Rubio base Prizm refractor
3. ADavis Prizm Team USA insert
4. BKnight Prizm base auto
5. MKG Cracked Ice
6. Marquis Teague 1/1 printing plate from Leaf
7. Jae Crowder 1/1 printing plate from Leaf
8. Dion Waiters State Pride on-card base from Leaf
9. Tyler Zeller so money /25 auto from Leaf
10.Terrence Jones Rookie roll call 8/49 auto
11.Marquis Teague Rookie roll call /199 auto
12.Jimmy Butler threads on-card auto
13.10-11 prestige JLin base /999, but graded PSA10
And yep all the cards are sleeved, loaded and bagged, and my kid knows not to open, bend, drop, play with 'em. They're "special" cards that get packed away in the little display box and get put away safely and nicely.
Man if my parents hadda given that kinda stuff to me each Christmas and BDay since a lil chap, I'd be cheerin' and be able to hand em down to my kids, or sold em in times of need or sell and reinvest yknow?
It wasn't too expensive an event, (apart from the "real" card that never came in the mail in time [JLin totally green ] and the reason why I first decided to do this), but it did take a lot of thinking and hunting.
And I'll do it all again come BDay time, and next Christmas for any kid I have in the future.
I got my 3 yr old a new folder and a whole bunch of new base/inserts of his favourite players
(jordan, lebron, rose, melo, kobe, durant etc) My son has never heard of these rookies so he has no interest in their cards.
He plays with his cards EVERYDAY. Re arranging them, sorting them out into teams, sets etc, even trading with me.
Takes his folder wherever he goes. Basically enjoying the hobby the way i believe a kid should.
I couldnt imagine it being too much fun for 3 or 5 yr old to not be able to play with cards he was given.
I could care less if he damages them. They're his cards. Plus hes always asking for more anyways lol

Lol yes bro I couldnt agree more. Thats why my kid has all the base of a classics and prizm bust I did lately. Scatters 'em all over the floor, looks for matching names or teams or doubles whatever. Absolutely loves 'em, asks what teams they are and says things like "daddy who's this one"..i say "that's kevin love mate" or whoever it is.n Seems to be a TWolves fan too, nice.
As for the 'special one's though, I'm trying to teach how to treat things different, how to hide them and so on. I was always a collector since knee high to a grasshopper, my first thing was stones from different beaches or rivers I'd been too. No doubt my kid is a collector too. Stoked.
