I'm so glad this board has resisted the urge to go along the lines of the others on the net and popping up over the years. Sure i may only talk about a few in the context of those sites but they are vocal and stand out. That and collectors have resisted the urge to go along with some collecting trends too.
To some its become more about gambling and flipping rather than collecting. Years ago if you got a cheap card, you were rapt to get it cheap and put it in you PC to appreciate. If you didn't need it you left it alone for another collector to pick up a bargain for their sets etc.
Sure sometimes you pick up cheap cards or trade up to get ahead to sell or trade for your own cards you need but not just pure profit.
Some simply view this as a business too much these days even when they claim to be in the hobby as collectors. Scouring eBay for hours and hours each day looking for sellers mistakes, cheap cards etc etc to only flip them for profit and to gloat and advance their ipod collection or hold player collectors to ransom over them. The lack of caring they show especially when they claim to be player collectors is the thing that gets to me here. If the shoe was on the other foot ;-)
Smart collectors do buy and sell and take advantage of trends if you are smart enough but there is a point in it where you just come out of it looking like a greedy prick not caring about collectors over your own personal $ gain.
What will never be tolerated here unlike other boards is buying up cards that others are specifically after and then submitting offers to them at double and tripple the price etc. If you see a card someone would want going cheap or have the oportunity to pick one up cheap PM the person and maybe offer to pick it up for them. I'm sure the collector will throw in some little extra making you come out ahead anyway.
Cards have become like stocks and bonds and its hurt the hobby in my eyes but like most good things when they are on to a good thing the big companies exploit them. MOST cards as an investment are a poor idea. They simply print more and more in most cases making supply outstrip demand eventually.
If you want to use the boards here to simply hit every cheap BIN and then flip for a 1000% profit ALL the time then there are plenty of other places you will fit right in where they will call me a card hippy and say I'm even crazy for giving stuff away.
People fighting over cards they don't collect so they don't miss out on a chance to make a buck makes me sick. There's a definate line between a smart collector and card vulture.
Ozcards has retained some of the hobbies original values and thats great. People here are less likely to not trade as they want to keep the card more rather than the price being to low and wanting more.
Here a great card is a great card. A great card isn't dictated by BV or market price as much. Everyone here seems to appreciate that a hard to find and often cheaper card is better than a high end card that can simply be bought if you have the dough at your disposal. Then its become more about collecting than just buying.
