I'm so glad this board has resisted the urge to go along the lines of the others on the net and popping up over the years. Sure i may only talk about a few in the context of those sites but they are vocal and stand out. That and collectors have resisted the urge to go along with some collecting trends too.

To some its become more about gambling and flipping rather than collecting. Years ago if you got a cheap card, you were rapt to get it cheap and put it in you PC to appreciate. If you didn't need it you left it alone for another collector to pick up a bargain for their sets etc.

Sure sometimes you pick up cheap cards or trade up to get ahead to sell or trade for your own cards you need but not just pure profit.

Some simply view this as a business too much these days even when they claim to be in the hobby as collectors. Scouring eBay for hours and hours each day looking for sellers mistakes, cheap cards etc etc to only flip them for profit and to gloat and advance their ipod collection or hold player collectors to ransom over them. The lack of caring they show especially when they claim to be player collectors is the thing that gets to me here. If the shoe was on the other foot ;-)

Smart collectors do buy and sell and take advantage of trends if you are smart enough but there is a point in it where you just come out of it looking like a greedy prick not caring about collectors over your own personal $ gain.

What will never be tolerated here unlike other boards is buying up cards that others are specifically after and then submitting offers to them at double and tripple the price etc. If you see a card someone would want going cheap or have the oportunity to pick one up cheap PM the person and maybe offer to pick it up for them. I'm sure the collector will throw in some little extra making you come out ahead anyway.

Cards have become like stocks and bonds and its hurt the hobby in my eyes but like most good things when they are on to a good thing the big companies exploit them. MOST cards as an investment are a poor idea. They simply print more and more in most cases making supply outstrip demand eventually.

If you want to use the boards here to simply hit every cheap BIN and then flip for a 1000% profit ALL the time then there are plenty of other places you will fit right in where they will call me a card hippy and say I'm even crazy for giving stuff away.

People fighting over cards they don't collect so they don't miss out on a chance to make a buck makes me sick. There's a definate line between a smart collector and card vulture.

Ozcards has retained some of the hobbies original values and thats great. People here are less likely to not trade as they want to keep the card more rather than the price being to low and wanting more. =D>

Here a great card is a great card. A great card isn't dictated by BV or market price as much. Everyone here seems to appreciate that a hard to find and often cheaper card is better than a high end card that can simply be bought if you have the dough at your disposal. Then its become more about collecting than just buying.

Ozcards-where the collectors not elite meet :D

Good post Chad. A very fair point and you back it up by the way you conduct yourself on these boards and help others.

Dunno howmany people have offered to pick up a card for me when buying something else (save on postage). And I've always been appreciative for that.

OzCards is an excellent place, which I belive we have the best bunch of collectors here, and it's only been a select few at times (most likely in the early seasons of joining OzCardzs) who have tried to make some money gain.

Sure, we've ALL done it, and we'll most likely do it again, there's nothing wrong with financial gain. It's only when it becomes an obstruction when you either pick something up infront of another collector, then offer it back at a profitable price that we become rather pissed off.

Fantastic post Chad. Is that why you're a Mod? ;)

Excellent post Chad.

I don't know how grouchy I'd be if someone jumped ahead of me to get a card I really needed for my collection and then tried to sell it back to me for heaps.

What I appreciate are people like Brad who have picked up the odd Rider for me but traded it to me for a reasonable price or offered it for a reasonable price.

When I look to pick up a bargain - I actually ask the folks I know who collect at the board if they have it first - and then advise them its available if they want it and if they don't want it I'll bid myself. Other times I've picked them up cheaply myself and merely traded for another card I've needed.

So good post Chad - it's the way it should be. I hope this place stays friendly and helpful to the collectors amongst us.

That's beautiful man...:smt089

I agree with your sentiments chad, i appreciate all those on ozcards who display a true love of the hobby; whether it be a generous spirit or just showing appreciation for others cards, no matter the BV.

I used to really hate those flippers/profiteers, but now its just like whatever - let them do what they want, im happy with my old school and Amare cards and thats all that matters to me.

People who extort others are scum though, ive been the victim of someone who had a card they knew i needed badly and tried to milk me. those people are not the kind i want to deal with.

One of the things I like here is the spirit in helping out fellow collectors.

I've had many people send me stuff for my collection for free, and at times I've tried to repay the favour as well.

You dont get this in a lot of the other trading card sites.

The smallest of gestures towards fellow collectors can really go a long way.

For me it's always great to receive a message from a member giving me a heads up on a newly listed auction, or telling me to expect something in the mail for my collection.

I really hope as many people as possible take the initiative, and help out other fellow collectors here by helping them further their collections.

For the cost of a bubble mailer and some postage its a great feeling to know that some cards you had lying around gathering dust, will be appreciated by someone else in their PC.

Cheers
Matt

A great Post indeed, this is the only card forum I have ever visited and the people are great, several have sent me bonus cards and given me great deals.. It does help when you collect sonics player cards and nobody else does..but a great collector's spirit on this forum

It does seem there r 2 types of collectors around , i personally am in it 4 the love of it but i don't hold it against others (much lol) that r trying 2 make a buck , to me their the ones missing out on the feeling of getting cards in the mail and sorting them out and admiring them but to each their own

Yeah to me I don't look at it as an investment at all..

I mean the ridnour auto's i get for US$ 2 - 5 bucks on ebay, how much money can I make on them??

I'm just stoked I can get rashard, ridnour and Ray Ray auto's killer cheap, I feel sorry for the seller most of the time who busted boxes & sold me their auto for a buck or two..but I didn't twist anybody's arm...
