Is Beckett Value (BV) dead?
Does anyone still use it?

Personally - I think that BV is a thing of the past. The prices in it are not updated regularly and are realistically already a month old as well.

Where does Beckett get it's prices from?

Just looking at completed auctions now, I highly doubt they utilise ebay as a source.

I think using ebay sales as a guide is the best bet, of course base on the range of sales, to incorporated the sniped or shilled auction, the one with the spelling mistake etc.)

For example:

sold for
$106 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2012-13-...44938831?pt=US_Basketball&hash=item4ad1a6a34f)
and
$61 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2012-Nat...65832975?pt=US_Basketball&hash=item51bd277e0f)

should I as the seller expect $106 and the buyer expect to get it at $61 of course not, but somewhere in the middle?

I don't know where they get their values from but yes they need to do something to be more accurate!

Past sales average, check out for shill and account for player hot games where people may have gone crazy for a day or two.

100% dead.

I would like to see many more articles in there though.

One of my fav becketts is the one about exquisite, I think it's from 04/05 with LeBron on it and another one with a topps chrome story.

BV has been dead 10+ years...it has absolutely no relevance and is a pure waste of time even mentioning it.

I agree. I've recently joined a couple of facebook groups and there seems to be an addiction to BV. One guy recently asked about it, I made a comment about it not being relevant and he thought I was having a go at him personally.

Yeah done & dusted, maybe if they incorporated ebay sales/averages or something but unfortunately it seems to have been now made obsolete

Agree been dead for years. Ebay was a game changer. Funny most card shop/stores still go by Beckett though! lol

Not sure how the "new" ComC price guide is going work, but the idea behind it is great. Sales data will go into setting values. On the downside, they are still pretty small compared to Ebay and if you have a really good card to sell, your going to try Ebay first.

Beckett's prices have never really been a very good indicator of value since the introduction of higher end cards. I just use the Beckett site for the free access to checklists and view completed auctions on Ebay to determine the recent trends in prices.

I actually think it is the fairest way to trade (like value cards). eBay is way to up and down to trade from, so I find BV very useful.

Yep if you frequent the euro boards most of those guys will trade for bv, but for sale it's always by eBay price's.

Actually think thats almost a good way to go about it. But then in the end, a deal is only ever done when two parties a happy so someone always needs to compromise and in the end ebay value and comc value can become negotiating tools.

Good luck doing a trade for a Jeremy Lin auto then if the BV is still at 600!! They sell for like 50

I paid between 3-5 dollars for several Nerlens Noel RWB prizm's yet they have their BV at $15. I've never seen them sell this high.

This is just 1 example why I think BV is irrelevant.

I use it just for the organize feature to keep track of my collection, there prices in regards to Penny are never very accurate in both extremes, a card you can pick up for a dollar will have a $20 BV, and cards that sell for $1000+ have a $250 BV.

I think beckett still has a place in our hobby, but I have always said, even scince the 90's. Beckett is just a GUIDE...not a BIBLE. It's prices should not be taken as gospel. I use mine almost every day, but I'm still kind of paper jockey, I prefer to read the mag. online is great but I love holding that card in my hand and sliding it down the page searching for the price.

Beckett assess their price ranges based on sales from participating US hobby stores - hence the highest and lowest average prices but do not take into consideration regional premiums. That is the way they have always done it. Ebay is too up and down and reliable enough as a gauge as it only reflects what individuals are willing to pay/sell an item for and the prices fluctuate too often to gain a stable average. You have to remember, our beloved hobby did start in the US so who would have a better understanding of the market they birthed? You just have to look at some ebay BIN sales for the one card varying from $1 to $20 - for the same card!!! Not everyone on e-bay knows the market.

Personally, I use BV for insurance purposes. That way if my collection is ever stolen or damaged in a fire/flood, i can get value back to replace it.
