Anyone know of a FREE, non-trial, Instant Messaging App, that can be used on a Network (LAN) for an Organisation?

Looking at imlementing one in the Office.

Have just tried RealPopUp and decided it's shit.

Anyone know of another?

is winpop up still around...It used to come standard with windows...we used to have a blast with it in computer studies at school!

Don't want access to the outside world, strictly internal messages only.

WinPopUp used to come Pre-XP, but now you have to buy it. Or should I say buy a version suitable for XP of it.

Anyone got any suggestions? Chad's was good, but not great enuff..

Messengers work as they connect to the remote server.. looks like u don't need an internet in the office...

have u tried this one? utalk network..

for LAN, if it's free version, i am pretty sure it's suckie.

another thing, i am not so sure, things like jabber or GAim.. they can let you setup manually about dNS and pORTS.. so, probably, i am not suggesting it will definitely work, logically, it should..... setup the chat server... on linux.. on ur office router... and manually linked... but i don't really see any reliable ones... maybe u have to check it in LAN Messengers , it may probably take hours, but it should work..

since half of the linux can run on 200mhz, 128mb, 2mb graphics, it is cheapest and most effective, just u need one RJ45 cable extra..

just my thoughts...

Have a look at Jabber. There are servers and clients for a heap of different platforms. You should be able to setup a private server without too many difficulties. Have a look at their website http://www.jabber.org/

Scotty,

you are welcome.. it's a long shot and will probably consume alot of hours.
but it's worth the try.. i mean, if u want customized environment networking, it's the best to customize..

Hey guys, I downloaded WinPopup NET.

It's exactly what I needed. Allows the users to send Instant Messages to any Computer on the Network, so long as they know the PC Name.

Once you send 1 message, it keeps that address in the history.

It will bounce back messages if they do not arrive.

Works a treat.

Cheers for all the help, and suggestions.
