How many OCT members are owed money or cards from deals done elsewhere ??? Or Treated badly ???

With so many collectors setting up pages left, right and centre !

Of course there are occasionally bad stories on hobby forums but for the thousands of successful deals completed the bad ones rarely happen because of so many collectors looking out for each other why take the extra risk.

With an Admin team that seems to be on-top of things and registered business's set up in most major cities in Australia it does not make sense to me that someone would take a risk buying from an unproven seller.

I was recently reading about a collector offering pre-pay live breaks which appears to have gone pear shaped and possibly left people out of pocket.

This made me wonder how many people have decided to buy outside of relatively secure forums like Ozcardtrader ?

Have you ever been burnt and lost money doing deals outside of Ozcardtrader ?
Perhaps you have dealt with someone who has become aggressive or abusive ?

I was ripped off by Jason Moss on a AFL Buy-Sell-Trade Facebook page. To this day he still claims he sent my card and never ripped anyone off. After doing some investigating i found at least 10 people he has ripped off.

Unfortunately it seems to be the nature of the beast in this day and age. Sometimes things work, and soemtimes they don't.

Speaking as someone who lives in a city with no where near the hobby love of other states, I can see why people are drawn to places where they believe a good deal is a good deal.

I also know that sometimes the art of waiting can help. I had a deal with a young guy from the States in which I bought a couple of cards. We had done a previous deal and it went well, with cards arriving within 2 weeks. Then on our second deal, after 1 month, no cards arrived. I called him out and all hell broke loose. When the dust settled though, cards arrived to me a month and a half after he had sent, as matched by the post mark.

The one thing I will note though is the constant negativity that is coming into our hobby. People not agreeing on prices, arguing over who said what, who deals with who and so on. I am glad that I have made a very nice network of collectors that I trust, they have my back and I have theirs. As someone who finds it hard to get funds to purchase a lot all the time, they will help me in any way they can.

Anyways, just my 2 cents.

and that's where the integrity of this site is maintained by the great membership we have here. The members here look out for each other and always keep admin in the loop with anything that might be awry and we will not tolerate any sort of questionable behaviour and if you look at many of these FB groups, they are set up or filled with previously banned members from here so I would tread very carefully.

Great advice Andrew but it seems that the best kind of thief is the one who knows how to sweet talk people into a false sense of security. A shame but reality

I think the point of the matter is these people are everywhere. Although I wasn't scammed, I was annoyed by the actions of another previous member here, all because I made it known about there questionable trading practices.

I am a pretty fair kind of guy, most people who know me will tell you that, but I can't sit back most times and watch others ruin the experience of other collectors. Maybe this gets me into trouble some times, but I don't think it should. I know of late my words have fallen foul with certain people.

I won't name names, but sometimes we all got to remember this hobby works with people. As a small community, we need each other to help form the safe and prosperous community that will attract new people and bring the old collectors back. This is a real benenfit of these forums in my opinion.

I will say this though, there are some other groups out there in social media land that have members from here and I know they for the most part working hard to bring this community up to a higher standard.

Of course not all the sweet talkers are bad sounds funny even saying that.
It does remind of the time I was doing security courses. So many people would pick out the worst dressed as potential thieves but the reality was that the best thieves would always be the best dressed.

As much as I agree that the OCT trading system is reasonably safe, buyers and sellers must always keep in mind that it's never 100% secure and very little can be done when anything does go wrong. Particularly with group breaks as there's a huge grey area with payments and getting what you paid for. It's essentially gambling. We've seen even the more reputable sellers occasionally stuff up and leave people disappointed. It's just bad luck and it's the risk we all take. I don't have a problem with some other group breakers or FB groups, I think everyone deserves a fair go and it's just a modern way of growing the hobby. In reality, handing your money over to a person on FB is no more risky than handing it over to someone on OCT if you haven't met them. Trading feedback is an OK guide, but it's not an iron clad guarantee.

What confuses me about it is why the facebook groups need to be grown? This site is Free (unless you become a premium member), there's no listing costs, no limit on how much you can upload etc.
So why not work to grow this established community rather than branching out into facebook groups? I'm sure there are people that have signed up to FB groups that are not on here, I'm sure there are buyers & sellers on ebay that are not on here.

I don't think it is anything against ozct. it just happens. For me, I was actually on FB groups before I came back to OZCT this time around. But I can tell you that I know of a couple of occaisions where through talking to people on FB, I have refereed them to OZCT. Thats how I came back.

I would also say the ease of it being there. You are on there checking what your mates had for breakfast, why not look at some cards as well.

I personally am on a couple of FB groups, not for buying/trading, but 1) it's a good way to see what's out there, scammers get banned from here and you never get to see what they have, this is another way of keeping track of missing/stolen cards. 2) I love anything to do with the hobby, while having breakie I love scrolling through FB pages, ebay etc....

Perhaps because it's against OCT rules to advertise your own group breaks? OCT is a great place for collectors but you've given exclusive rights to one business for all group breaks. I know some people have been banned purely for advertising group breaks. Nothing against their character at all. So they go to FB and set up there. What I don't understand is why they aren't welcome to recruit people on OCT for their breaks, keeping in mind that it's always "buyer beware" no matter who is running the break. I'm pro-choice when it comes to collecting. I don't like being told who to buy from, which is why I use 4 or 5 other group breakers.

Because there is a monopoly here for group breaks... that is one reason I for one have participated with success on a facebook group for a break, because I liked those prices better and they were smaller box group breaks, smaller amount for my "gamble" so to speak. Only one person is allowed to do group breaks on ozct, and I don't like the prices, that is why I would risk going elsewhere. That said I have also used Cherry's services during his live video breaks, so nothign against him either. It's just easier to buy into smaller breaks for me.
