How did you choose your PC player?

Hi guys,

I'm having some troubles choosing a PC player. Over the past year or so I have been through Kyrie, Brandon Knight, Paul George, Maurice Harkless, Anfernee Hardaway, Kobe, Melo, Durant and MJ. I will always have a soft spot for MJ as I used to love his cards back in the 90's. However I'm not convinced on collecting any of these guys for various reasons. I will always have a few cards of these players.

So, I would like to know how some of you chose your PC player and why.

Thanks in advance.

Brendan

I'll just focus on my primary (focus) PC's. I started collecting Patrick Ewing (HOF) initially as a friend of mine at the time had a pc of shawn kemp, so i went for a player who was a) affordable and b) a good player. That wound up being Ewing. But as I acquired more of his cards (I started in 1995), I learned more about Ewing as a person and my PC become something more a respect for the man thing. With Jalen Rose - initially, it was because he was a RC the year i started collecting and he was a south-paw (left-handed) like myself. Then I found out more about him and his pc moved into the direction of Ewing's. For Garnett ... the first card i got of him was his 1995-96 Collector's choice RC and when I read that he had in inside-outside game reminscent of Patrick Ewing, i was sold. Since then I've found out more about him as a person off the court and I have a great amount of respect for him. Lamarcus aldridge ... i simply had enough cards of him start a PC. Jeff Green ... had enough cards for a pc start, he was a georgetown alumni and i liked his play.

I think you raise good points about a good player and affordable. When I started my other PC's I wanted my current favourite players but also their high end cards and on my budget it is impossible. I can't spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a single card and ended up buying base and cheaper inserts. This is the reason why I started a Brandon Knight PC. I obtained a patch card through a trade and found his cards were cheap at the time. I had never seen him play at all.

My next move is to sit back and have a think about which player I would like to collect long term. There is some criteria as well to go along with this:
1. Must be a HOF
2. Must have been playing during my 90's collecting days
3. Be affordable as I want to collect patch cards and autos
4. I need to have a keen interest in the player which will come as I put some time into researching each of the players that meet the above criteria

I think I will always continue my Maurice Harkless PC as I think he is a solid young guy who just needs time. I will just have to call it a side PC...

As for the other guys, the collections I have might find their way into my cheap sales thread.

I'm an avid history fan and I love NBA history... actually I love any sports history and I am actually at West Indian-South African links in world cricket over a 25 year period ending in 1983 for my thesis.

I decided on Mikan because he was both literally and metaphorically the first NBA giant.

The man won 7 titles over a decade in three different leagues, was named to the All-BAA/All-NBA 1st team 6 times, won 5 scoring titles in two different leagues and played in the first 4 NBA All-Star games.

They didn't have an NBA MVP award (he won the 1948 NBL MVP) until after he retired but he would have 3 or 4 at least if they did. The list of guys with 7 titles, 5 scoring titles and 5 NBA MVPs? None.

Plus he coached the Lakers to their worst ever season and ruined the ABA AND brought the NBA back to Minnesota and decided the ABA should have its iconic red, white and blue ball. A man of singular talents on the court and mixed results off it.

So in short, I picked someone who's career I really respected and went from there. I really enjoy his cards as they are a part of history...

This card here is 64 years old

This card here has a patch which is at least 50 years old

Both pieces of NBA history.

I bounced ideas around on PC players and went with Stoudemire as he was my favourite player. It didn't last very long after I realised just how many cards there are and how many more panini are releasing every year. I wanted to collect a player from the 90's but that never really took off, I ended up deciding to collect the silhouette set of cards because I loved the design and wide range of players from different eras. I think it's good because I only ever have to watch one release a year and don't have 100 different searches on eBay, player collect just seems to hard to me.

I guess at the end of the day it really depends on what you want from your collection.

For the love of the game or to try and make money !

For me it came down to a few things.

Looking for a new hobby at the time & watching my little brother bust a rare MJ card from a pack. This was a defining moment for me Being a big MJ fan since moving to WA in the 90's.

Some of my most treasured cards are worth next to nothing but the memories captured on some cards (games that I remember watching) are worth much more to me.... or the time and effort it took for me to slowly upgrade my 93/94 Fleer Living Legend MJ to what I thought was in fantastic condition.... one day I would love to get that particular card graded just to see how well I did or didn't do

Other cards I got into collector was based on a limited budget for cards. Like most I picked up Rookies or sets that I thought would go up in value and moved them on so that I could slowly increase my collection without spending too much money.

Nasty patch cards is something that blew me away when I first saw them. Definitely got a soft spot for them but self control is needed with some very rare and expensive patch cards out there.

I have never been a fan of hoarding a particular card with 1 copy being enough for me. Paying a fair price also helps you pick up some of the rarer stuff out there ! Chasing every card for as little as possible tends to work against you when something special pops up

At then end of the day, it is my first love of the hobby that keeps me in it. Not overspending also helps.... ;) ... end rant

I totally agree. When I got back into collecting I got lucky and picked up a few nice cards which sold for quite a bit of $$$. This reignited my love for collecting and I found out very quickly that if I were to do it to make money I would be in it for the wrong reason.

However, if I was to collect a HOF I would feel like I am not throwing my money away and if the time came that I needed money I could quite easily find buyers for them.

At the end of the day it would be nice to be known as the ??? collector. Plus having some nice cards on show.

I originally started collecting in the early 90s back then it was David Robinson loved his game,
big man scoring/rebounding and shot blocking.
came back into the hobby about four years ago I thought why not go Aussie with Bogut
not to expensive/ plenty to choose from.
now over a hundred autos and a total of over four hundred

My PC's, which I have mentioned before, sort of stem from the 90's collecting.

When I first started, I collected Shawn Kemp. love his play for a big man, what wasn't to love? Big dunks, power moves, All Star, fairly cheap compared to the big rookies of the 90s. I had a lot of his things then back in the day it became harder and harder to get his stuff for me, so I moved on to Gary Payton also, which was easy with my love of the Sonics. Then with the love of the Sonics came a mini Sonics PC.

After that boomed for a while, I took a side PC (which I still collect) in Brent Barry. He impressed me with winning the Slam Dunk comp and it bloomed from there. After a while I realized that I had inadvertently started and Oregon State University PC, with Payton and Barry both attending there during college. After a while, Barry actually played for the Sonics which made the circle complete so to speak. I also flirted with a couple of other side PC's in Baron Davis (after I met him at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane as part of the US Basketball team), Jalen Rose and Tim Hardaway.

Move forward to the 2012-13 season. Haven't collected anything new in ages, cards still in boxes, I get on FB one day and start chatting to guys about cards again. Sure enough all the PC questions come up and I find that the Sonics stuff, not really as impressive in the eyes of the newer generation. So a new PC needs to be born. During a chat one day I head back to the archives and find a first round draft pick from OSU....Jared Cunningham, and hence my latest PC is born.

So I think it is something that just triggers you, a moment, a play, a championship, a team to a PC. You just have to find "that moment".

I wish you the best of luck in your search Brendan!

For me I just loved watching Penny play, loved his number as that was my favourite number and he played the position that I played, So it all just seemed to work. Obviously collecting in Australia died out and I forgot all about cards until I stumbled across them on ebay 2 years ago... I just decided to pick up right where I left off. Crazily expensive and hard to keep up with though, sometimes I feel it was a bad idea...but when I do, like everyone else does and read up on him and see what he still actively achieves for the sport and his community I cant help but continue with the chase which I have actually grown a huge love for. And its lucky its for love and not cash because with all the new releases his card values are plummeting... But looking at the bright side it is making my collecting that much easier:)!

He was honoured at the Orlando game the other night and sat with the commentators through the 3rd qtr. He is such a humble and relaxed guy, was good to listen to him talk about his time with the Magic.

When I started collecting back in late april last year, the first thing i did was jump in on a few group breaks to try and build some trade bait without spending up big. On release day of preferred (my first break) I hit the warriors in a random team case break, and pulled a Festus Ezeli prime Silo. While waiting for it to arrive from the states I was putting a lot of thought into who to collect, and being a laker fan Kobe was just not possible from a dollar perspective. Now, I already liked Faried as a player and admired his hustle and work ethic, so when a member on here from Europe offered me over BV $300 of Faried cards for the Ezeli it was a no brainer to go ahead with it with the deal and the PC was off and running!

This was the first card we agreed to as part of the deal, #/25 - what a way to start!

Current Star PC> The nut case Lance Stephenson looks like he's going to explode soon, figuratively and literally...

Old School Player PC> As for old school Isiah Thomas doesn't get enough hobby love for how good he was and he's cheap to collect too, I'd look at PC'ing him!

As for me, I PC the :goat:and a few others just for fun Like PG,Lance,Sprewell,Isiah, even Faried some times too...

I have this issue with my D Rob PC at the moment. I keep trying to decide whether I collect him or the Spurs as a team chase. With the prospect of new Aussie talent hitting the NBA in the next few years I am thinking of holding off until then and continue with my silo chase. I have 110/259 so have made good progress and with another round of Preferred most likely it is probably better for my bank balance to just have the one set to focus on. I tried collecting Mason Plumlee after seeing his Summer League form but he didnt impress me as much in the season proper so I abandoned that chase. I admire those who stick with their PC players because it isn't easy in the day of over production.

After doing a bucket load of research today into Hall of Famers I have narrowed my search down to Bill Russell and Karl Malone.

I am leaning towards Bill Russell as his story is intriguing me. However, Karl Malone's signature and the availability of patches makes it a tough call.

I never realised this. Very interesting.

I have got to say the past few days have been very interesting. I am learning more and more about the history of basketball and the great players of years ago.

I think I have made my decision on my PC player. Based on my criteria earlier I haven't fulfilled a couple of them but I think it is a great choice.

1. Must be a HOF - Yes
2. Must have been playing during my 90's collecting days - No
3. Be affordable as I want to collect patch cards and autos - Affordable - Yes, Patch - Not as many around
4. I need to have a keen interest in the player which will come as I put some time into researching each of the players that meet the above criteria - Yes

I PC multiple players, but I don't collect everything (every card) of them.
While the ones that I currently PC are HOF'ers or potential HOF'ers, HOF isn't a deciding factor. As long as I feel connected with the player, then I would start a PC (whether starting it independently or "spinning off" from a set building).

For me its alot of things I pc k love
1/ pc player must be a hard working smart player
2/ can't be a up himself if I get what I mean.
3/ his top number must be an even number lol
4/ I look for a player who has more to offer than just scoring.
5/has potential to get better with time.
6/ love watching them play!
