Matt Murphy is about to become a heck of a lot richer.
Barry Bonds' historic 756th home run ball, the one Murphy nabbed that instantly became one of the most publicized pieces of memorabilia in recent history, shattered pre-auction estimates when it closed Saturday for $752,467.20 (with buyer's premium) on the strength of 31 bids.
The three-quarters-of-a-million-dollar sphere was the showcase item in the SCP/Sotheby's Auctions event that began on Aug. 28. In related news, Bonds home run ball No. 755 -- also featured in the Sotheby's/SCP Auctions sale -- closed at $186,750 after 11 bids.
BTW Matt Murphy caught the ball in the stands.
