Have You Ever Been Robbed?

Recently I got armed robbed at work for the second time in a few months(I work in a bottle shop). This one was a lot worse then the first one, basically a guy come in with a pretty big knife and almost stabbed my in the chest, took the money from the till and my phone and said he knows where I live (being that I live close to work its a possibility that he does). Ever since I've been feeling pretty sketchy and paranoid at work. Just wondering if anything like that has happened to you and how you dealt with it.

I wouldn't go so far as moving state lol but yeah i reckon a change of job would be the way to go. No need to risk your arse over a job

I was glassed years ago (thankfully the bottle never broke) - they got no money out of me as i had none - just a cheap $20 watch and pair of prescription glasses. Thankfully I was close to the police station so I just told them when I got there.

Also, If you saw the guy's face let the police know and also give them access to your shops video camera (they probably asked for that onfo already though). I guess the best you can do is have something heavy and mobile under the counter - a baseball bat, a crowbar - something to that effect.... and know how to use it to it's uttermost effectiveness.

Dude has his face completely covered unfortunately. Police have all the video footage but there isn't much to go on.

hate scum bags who do that. Clearly says that they either have a record or are just too cowardly to show their faces. Get an aluminium baseball or a crowbar and just have it under the counter - technically police can't say squat about that as it is not a gun. You work in a high-risk place of employment and so are allowed the right to defend yourself by whatever means - just so long as it's legal. If you were to have a gun, you'd have to be a registered and licensed shooter which involves a crapload of psych tests and all that. Then your place of employment would have to be licensed to have a firearm on the premises - basically to much hassle involved in getting a gun. Having a baseball bat or a crowbar on the other hand....

I have not had it happen to me, I hope your employer is offering some sort of counseling to help you get over this, scum like that need a good swift kick in the nuts, probably not much chance when you have a coward on the end of a knife pointing it at you to do that but, do you enjoy your job? if you do it makes it a lot harder to walk away and try for a new one.

My sister was held up when she was working at a jewelery store last year and she ended up leaving the job, did u have security guards with you?

Hope she is doing well mate. No security, just me alone. Its a pretty small shop.

yeah shes good now thanks, the cops said that he had a partner scope out the store beforehand and that it probably is connected to a few jewelry thefts around

I have been on both sides, we have been robbed a few times in different houses we have lived in whilst serving. One in particular was my first posting in Wagga Wagga, a couple of indiginious fella's broke into my first married quarter, they were coming out of the house just as I pulled up.........caught 1 and hand cuffed him to the fence but could not catch the other before he went into his house which was right across the street from us. Local cops came and hauled them away.

On the other hand, investigated a few break and enters whilst on the job (early part of my career), some small stuff that you never really find out who is responsible for but a couple of big thefts (explo) and other stuff. Got to assist NSWPOL to service warrants on an ex-RAAFie living in Nelson Bay who was making IEDs...........good times...............lol

Wagga is really bad at the moment, a break in each day at least, cops have arrested 80 so far. My boss got house robbed twice in a week, all small electronic stuff. First was day after they moved in, just smashed window to get in garage and got nothing, next one smashed into house. It has really affected her and the kids. The cops think it is 3 14 yr olds.

Have worked in a service station and bottle shop...never got robbed or had any problems. Never had my house or unit broken into and never expected it to be, i guess i have lived in pretty safe areas. Would be pretty much impossible to break into the unit i live in now. Lot of security doors in the complex, i'm on the top floor, and my door is also pretty impossible to break into.

I like staying in my wife's hometown in Japan though. It is in the countryside and no one locks their doors at night or even when they go out for the day.

That's terrible news Jaames, I hope work have been supportive with what happened. Chances are he was just saying he knows where you live just to freak you out, but it would still put the wind up you for sure. Taking your phone is a low act, knowing he has personal info of yours isn't great either but chances are he probably threw it away anyway.

I used to manage a bottle shop and never felt comfortable in there I gotta say. Never got robbed but thefts were a regular occurence and had a couple of troublemakers in the shop and had to call the police......some guy covered in tatts with a shaved head rabbiting on about how he was going to kill me, clearly under the influence and turned out he was not long out of the big house on parole so glad that didn't end badly!

I got out of that job about 6 months ago and feel much better for the move. I think you should look for something else, while you stay in the same job you will always have bad vibes there and you shouldn't be made to feel personally unsafe in the workplace. Move on buddy, you will feel far better for it. You don't need the stress

just a reflection off the piss poor woe is me society we live in .i live in a small country town and there has been several hold ups and robberies in the last 2 months.they need to bring back the old days were police were respected not a joke like today .having grown up through the 80,s and 90,s i think we respected our elders etc more and wouldn,t have done half the stuff kids do today

I think that you will find alot of people who commit these offences have out of control drug addictions. Armed robberies are on the rise because they are so prominent in the media; the offenders cover their face, wear gloves and then it is a real effort to identify them or link them forensically to the offence therefore there is a reasonable chance they will get away.

If you are the victim of an armed robbery just remember you are dealing with a desperate and therefore unpredictable person so it is best to let them have what they want. All shops are insured and it is just not worth you getting hurt. That is being sensible and not soft, your life / welfare is not worth a few hundred lousy $$$ from the till.
