Some of you may remember from my first column in Handle regarding my BGS grading card submission, I occasionally send cards to the USA to have them graded by a grading company. When I receive my cards back, one of the main questions I am asked is "How can I send my cards to be graded from Australia ?".
There are two who stand out as the main players - BGS (Beckett Grading Service) & PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator). Other companies such as SGC (Sportscard Guaranty, LLC) & GAI (Global Authentication Inc) are used for grading mostly vintage cards.
When sending to any grading company, you need to pack your cards to ensure they are safe and secure on the trip over there. The best and preferred method of any grading company is to put your cards into sleeves, and then into Card Savers. You then put groups of 25 cards or less together and tape them so they are secure between two pieces of cardboard. I normally bubble wrap this little package, and place it so it is secure in a box with packing material. Now your cards are ready to send. But who do you send your cards to ?
By far my favourite company to grade cards with is PSA
http://www.psacard.com. To send to PSA you must purchase an international membership, which will cost you approx $165 AUD for one year or $300 AUD for two years, which gives you submission rights for the length of time. PSA also gives you 6 or 12 seven day grading vouchers (depending on your membership choice), access to their message boards, the PSA price guides and PSA Population reports (which tell you how many of each graded card there is). Grading starts at $8 USD ($11 AUD) per card for the 35 day service. PSA also have monthly specials for various grading deals. A recent one I took advantage of was a $5 USD ($6.80 AUD) per card special. There was a 25 card minimum on this special, and no guaranteed turnaround times. My submission took 2 months to get graded, so don't wait for a special if you are in a hurry to get them back. PSA will send your graded cards direct back to Australia, with shipping costing $35 AUD for 1-10 cards, $45 AUD for 11-20 cards, adding about $10 AUD for every 10 cards after that. Submission forms are available for download from the members section of their website after you become a member.
BGS (
Beckett Media LP - The #1 Authority on Collectibles) is probably the most well known of all grading companies. Do not confuse BGS with BCCG, which is their collectors club grading. You do not require a membership to submit cards to BGS, so that will cut down on the outlay. Costs start at $8 USD ($11 AUD per card) on the 45 day grading service for 1-19 cards, and give $1 discount per card if you submit more than 20 cards. Until recently they would not ship your cards back to Australia unless you had a FedEx Account, which was impossible for any regular person to get. However they have relaxed their rules recently, and will now ship via Global Express mail. Shipping back to Australia will cost $33 AUD for 1-20 cards, $44 AUD for 21-40 cards & $56 AUD for 41-60 cards. Insurance is extra (and recommended) and will cost you $2 per $100 coverage. Submission forms are available for download from their website.
No matter who you choose, make sure you factor in the cost of sending the cards to the grading companies as well. I always send my cards via Airmail with Insurance tracking. This provides you with a tracking number you can use in case your parcel doesn't arrive. As a guide, my last submission of 30 cards cost me about $30 AUD to post. Check with your local post office for their current rates.
Overall, the cost of grading your cards can be quite expensive. But the joy of seeing a card that has been in your folder for 10 years come back as a PSA10 or BGS 9.5 makes it all worthwhile!
