has anyone had their high end cards beckett graded?

Yeah and you dont' want to know how it ended.

BGS wont get anymore grading from me and a lot of others in the hobby now after they damaged my card. A rare high end Larry Bird auto that was on the way to a BGS 9.5 gold label.

Depends on what you are grading really. Each grading co has its pros and cons depending on year and issue of card etc.

This is scaring me Chad! I am thinking sending some to Beckett. :D

yeh, i wouldn't want to send a high end value card to get it damaged, and a low value card to not get any value out of the grading.

Ive had some good results with both BGS and PSA - though i've heard at least 3 stories similar to Chad where the cards have been bent and BGS deny any responsibility.

That being said - this is my last article from Handle as it should have appeared. It gives a run down on the costs involved. I will put this in the FAQ forum as well :)

Some of you may remember from my first column in Handle regarding my BGS grading card submission, I occasionally send cards to the USA to have them graded by a grading company. When I receive my cards back, one of the main questions I am asked is "How can I send my cards to be graded from Australia ?".

There are two who stand out as the main players - BGS (Beckett Grading Service) & PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator). Other companies such as SGC (Sportscard Guaranty, LLC) & GAI (Global Authentication Inc) are used for grading mostly vintage cards.

When sending to any grading company, you need to pack your cards to ensure they are safe and secure on the trip over there. The best and preferred method of any grading company is to put your cards into sleeves, and then into Card Savers. You then put groups of 25 cards or less together and tape them so they are secure between two pieces of cardboard. I normally bubble wrap this little package, and place it so it is secure in a box with packing material. Now your cards are ready to send. But who do you send your cards to ?

By far my favourite company to grade cards with is PSA http://www.psacard.com. To send to PSA you must purchase an international membership, which will cost you approx $165 AUD for one year or $300 AUD for two years, which gives you submission rights for the length of time. PSA also gives you 6 or 12 seven day grading vouchers (depending on your membership choice), access to their message boards, the PSA price guides and PSA Population reports (which tell you how many of each graded card there is). Grading starts at $8 USD ($11 AUD) per card for the 35 day service. PSA also have monthly specials for various grading deals. A recent one I took advantage of was a $5 USD ($6.80 AUD) per card special. There was a 25 card minimum on this special, and no guaranteed turnaround times. My submission took 2 months to get graded, so don't wait for a special if you are in a hurry to get them back. PSA will send your graded cards direct back to Australia, with shipping costing $35 AUD for 1-10 cards, $45 AUD for 11-20 cards, adding about $10 AUD for every 10 cards after that. Submission forms are available for download from the members section of their website after you become a member.

BGS (Beckett Media LP - The #1 Authority on Collectibles) is probably the most well known of all grading companies. Do not confuse BGS with BCCG, which is their collectors club grading. You do not require a membership to submit cards to BGS, so that will cut down on the outlay. Costs start at $8 USD ($11 AUD per card) on the 45 day grading service for 1-19 cards, and give $1 discount per card if you submit more than 20 cards. Until recently they would not ship your cards back to Australia unless you had a FedEx Account, which was impossible for any regular person to get. However they have relaxed their rules recently, and will now ship via Global Express mail. Shipping back to Australia will cost $33 AUD for 1-20 cards, $44 AUD for 21-40 cards & $56 AUD for 41-60 cards. Insurance is extra (and recommended) and will cost you $2 per $100 coverage. Submission forms are available for download from their website.

No matter who you choose, make sure you factor in the cost of sending the cards to the grading companies as well. I always send my cards via Airmail with Insurance tracking. This provides you with a tracking number you can use in case your parcel doesn't arrive. As a guide, my last submission of 30 cards cost me about $30 AUD to post. Check with your local post office for their current rates.

Overall, the cost of grading your cards can be quite expensive. But the joy of seeing a card that has been in your folder for 10 years come back as a PSA10 or BGS 9.5 makes it all worthwhile!

i think when it comes to grading there some simple things to think about.

1) ask yourself: is the card irreplacable? if its ultra rare and will be impossible/extremely difficult to replace, youve really got to ask yourself if the risk of losing it/having it returned damaged is worth the chance of a high grade.

2) if the card is not ultra rare then all you have to do is take some detailed pics/scans of the card and some sort of verification its the same card being sent for grading, before you send it off. then if it comes back damaged you have some kind of proof of the cards original condition and can make a legit money claim equivalent to the cards value. ive heard of a couple of incidents where this method was succesful in getting a monetary refund from the grading company.

cool - I am also thinking of sending in some cards for grading...
Does anyone know roughly what the grading from Becketts will be for a card that looks pretty good on front/ has 4 sharp corners but has some whitening on the back. Sorry for interrupting your thread westriot - I was actually going to start a new thread but saw this one :)

I'd be very careful as they are very strict on grading. I know of a few people who were very disappointed as their idea of mint wasn't what the grading companies was. If you can find an imperfection even if its tiny, so will they.

You will find BGS are very strict. I sent some Finest XRC redemptions to them - they had gone straight from the Top Loaders they were sent in from Topps, straight into the card savers and off to BGS and they came back 9's - I couldnt see the problems! BGS also take into account the back of the card more than any other grading company. I have a BGS 9 Grant Hill RC Refractor and it had an 8.5 for surface. When I sent it back to BGS for regrading, they said it was still an 8.5 because there were 2 slight marks on the BACK of the card!!! Im still looking and can't see what they are talking about.

My suggestion is get a magnifier of at least 4X. They are looking at your card the same way ;-)

Even with proof JZA they stall. I'm lucky enough to know others in Becketts other divisions but I still got ripped off. They are still run as seperate companies though.

I want send anymore to BGS and alot of my mates that were big submitters have stopped too.

PSA and SGC for me from now on.

LMAO graham! They must be using super telescopes :) Thanks for the help guys.. don't think I will bother with grading now as if becketts only just started shipping to Australia they probably won't ship back to New Zealand! Sorry again if I hijacked your thread westriot!

I wouldn't grade the card unless I was sure it would get a "gem-mint" grade and I was thinking about selling it.

Too risky to be sending high-end stuff overseas.

Its not the sending Sam its the handling of the cards once BGS have them. In my case they card was in the middle of a bunch of cards packed correctly with no room for damage. AND it was the ONLY one damaged. Sent priority and with insurance and tracking. I've got no problem with sending high end cards over $500US around the world but dishonest BGS employees are the careless ones.

When I said shipping to Australia - this includes anywhere International (including little ol' NZ)

But im with Chad - I wont be sending anything further to BGS.
