Guess who’s coming to dinner?
A few weeks ago I was given a priceless chance to have dinner with two legends of world cricket, one being my idol as I was growing up.
When a work colleague asked me to the dinner I thought I would be stuck on a distant table with the tea lady and the photocopy attendant while the two legends waxed lyrical on their careers up on stage with a celebrity voice as MC.
It could not be further from the truth, not only was I sitting on the table with my idol but I was sitting at his right hand!
For two hours we asked questions, discussed life, shared a plate of oysters and the merits of the wine selection.
We discussed family, friends, and of course cricket and the various perils of the media, travel, selection and the life on the road.
It is true that time flies, when in such company, although this is never going to slip from my memories.
We discussed moving from Mossman to Brisbane, Gats reverse sweep in 87, being called “Captain Grumpyâ€, the Holy Grail of 94/95 Sheffield Shield Final and, of course, Fatty’s Catch. Know who it is yet?
The 2nd legend broke Australian hearts in 81, 85 *and then again in 87 and has walked the length and breath of his country on the way to a knighthood. His taste in wine is impeccable as is his opinion of cricket’s future and some of the people playing the game to day, for being soft!
I was fortunate that we were permitted to have a photo taken, and believe me it was not guaranteed as one of the diner’s was denied the opportunity because he was “rude†to the Pommy Legend.

So I have been waiting for some weeks for the photographic proof to come through and this will sit on my desk at work for all to see for evermore.

As you can tell from my facial expression, your childhood Idols are always Gods!

Some important information to all us card fans, AB has signed thousands of cards in his career and asks us just to be polite when asking for autographs through the mail (TTM) as he is interested who is making the request.
