Earl seizes the day and readies to join Storm

PENRITH young gun Sandor Earl will become the second Panther in as many weeks to leave the club following the departure of Timana Tahu, revealing to The Sun-Herald he is preparing to sign a two-year deal with the Melbourne Storm.

Earl is one of 10 Panthers off contract, and with the uncertainty surrounding the futures of many players at the club following the sacking of coach Matt Elliott and appointment of coaching director Phil Gould, the 21-year-old said he was planning on inking a deal with the Storm within the next fortnight should Penrith fail to come to the table with an offer.

Cronulla have made an offer to the powerful flyer but he said his first preference was to remain at the foot of the mountains

''It's a bit hard for everyone with what's going on at the club as far as administration but I guess everyone is waiting on 'Gus' [Gould] to not only make selections but get a coach to see where things are going,'' Earl said. ''But as far as other things go, I've had pretty good talks with the Storm and the Sharks. I'd love to stay at Penrith but at the same time I've got to look after myself, and the future is something that weighs on your mind. It's pretty distracting. I've had a talk with Gus but nothing too serious. He addressed the team to let us know what his intentions are, now we are just waiting for a coach to be announced. But there are a fair few players off contract, and I need to get the ball rolling. Gus said he was happy to see me playing first grade, and wanted me to keep it going. I've had a little bit to do with him because he's been commentating on me since I was about 16 back in school days. I've always had positive feedback from him but it's a matter of sorting out my future.''

Earl said cash was not his motivation. ''I've got a lot of improvement in me,'' he said. ''So I'm not chasing big dollars. I want to play somewhere where I can improve as a player over the next few years and then hopefully I can come out with more first grade under my belt and experience, and then start looking at something a bit more serious. Melbourne's appealing because of not only everything you hear about it, but if you don't come out a better player, you come out a rep player. That's something I want to look to achieve over the next few years, and I guess money will follow that.''

With Beau Champion heading for the Gold Coast, a centre position will be vacant in Melbourne.

''I enjoy the wing because it covers a few things in my game - ball running and under the high ball - but centre is a position I definitely want to look at,'' Earl said. ''I think it's a switch you make once you've got your wing position down pat

Half an hour and no response. LOL. I am picturing Girds crying into his hands with ripped up Sandor Earl cards in front of him.

i really hope the panthers resign him. Says in the article "his first preference was to remain at the foot of the mountains." The panthers this year are really woeful. Timana tahu out for the season (and leaving to the knights - what a waste of money he was:whistle:), Michael Gordon out for the season, Last nights game they handed the game to the Tigers - as they let them jump over 2 times to be ahead by 2 points late in the second half, Sandor now rumoured to be leaving, our coach has been dumped - but is still coaching this year (wonderfully too), We dont know who next years coach will be, Jennings is playing average - and he didnt deserve his blues jersey thats for sure (straight from a panthers fans mouth). Its just problem after problem this year. They have had a huge fall from last year thats for sure. 2nd on the table to 2nd last. :(

Sorry for the rant, needed to let my frustration out somehow - thinking its time to change my signature!
Cheers

Any club would be woeful with Timana Tahu in it. The guy is a liability to any team and I don't understand why Knights would waste their money on him. Look at him the wrong way and he will cry racist.

even without Timana tahu we are woeful. I agree though, he was a huge waste of money. Was amazed the knights wanted him.

I think with a player like Earl, he would basically get the same amount at most clubs, would be looking to futher his career and then start to get bigger contracts...

So was everyone else in Newcastle. They need to face facts with this guy. He has been a problem everywhere he has played.

I'm really surprised Bennett allowed Ta-boohoo to sign.

With Earl I think he has the ability to become a solid centre, he needs a coach like Bellamy, Bennett or Sheens.

This contract he signs will effect The extent of his development from part time first grader into possible rep player, which in turn will effect the dollars he will attract with his next contract.

I don't think he is driven by dollars as such now, but will definatley be looking to the future.

I have come to terms that these days the only loyalty you can hope for is that a player will stay on league in Australia.

Not AFL, or French rugby.

I'm just happy we can still watch them play.

I know if I was offered 50-60% more money to do the same job elsewhere I would most likely take the money. In the end it's about looking after family.

So in effect, he wants to come to Storm for two years, improve by, say 15-20% as a player, and then chase the big bucks when he's better credentialled? Hmm, not sure how the Storm hierarchy would take this attitude, but I guess winning and getting rich quick are far more enticing for young League players nowadays than club loyalty.
I havent seen much of the Panthers this year, does he have the potential to be a rep-grade player?
