Gallen and Myles to bash out Origin differences in the ring
Paul Gallen and Nate Myles have been invited into the boxing ring to sort this thing out once and for all.
Duco Events, the firm which enticed Gallen into the Woodstock Fight For Life boxing bout last year, want the NSW skipper to duke it out with Queensland forward Myles in this year's charity event. And it's understood the promoters are prepared to put up a purse of up to $80,000 to make it happen for this year's edition, in Auckland on December 14. Gallen won plenty of admirers across the Tasman when he scored a points win over Hika Elliot, the Chiefs hooker and a third dan karate black belt. Duco Events, the promoters behind the Auckland Nines rugby league proposal, are keen for Gallen and Myles to again square off after their infamous stoush in the State of Origin opener.
''We'd love to make it happen,'' said Duco Events director David Higgins. ''Normally our match-ups are league vs rugby but for a magic match-up like this we would be prepared to break the rules and go for NSW vs Queensland.'' Last year's card included fellow leaguies Greg Bird, Willie Mason and Manu Vatuvei, but Gallen was arguably the most impressive of the lot, which is why promoters are keen for the NSW skipper to return for 'Origin IV'. ''Of all the celebrities and sports stars that we've had in the ring, and there have been many, Paul is one of the best,'' Higgins said. ''Good boxing judges were surprised how good he was in the ring. The footwork, the relentless approach and the speed were such that if he wanted to be a boxer in a previous life, he could have given it a good go.
''He's definitely someone we would like to be involved with again.''
