ESP Limited Edition 2013 (Info Updated 04/10/13)

slaters kid will be sent to the best schools in australia thanks to select/esp

I know I've said it previously but these guys need to be aware of what has been done before. Not just across their product, but across the history of the hobby.
I know they don't care about what Select did, I've heard all that, but they should. They should be on top of what Select did well and what they did poorly. They should be across what works for their target market and what does not. They should be aware that certain players have had signature cards done to death, they should also be aware that collectors want something new and unique with every release. A bit of history homework might serve them well.

couldn't agree more.

I know we have all thrown up our ideas but there are so many unique things ESP could do. I am sure you recall the Dynamic 94 Masters Captains Choice insert set, imagine a dual sig Captains choice, how good would that be. So many ideas they could dominate this hobby with

I would love to see a premiership winning captains card series.

Every premiership winning captain from 1908.

Might get some people a little more interested in the history of our great game instead of everyone building up all the niff nuffs in this modern era.

You need to consider the cost of getting something like that 1) Given the go-ahead from the NRL and then 2) being told by the NRL that you have approval but you need to do the work of chasing up the players/clubs/families for rights etc

100% agree.

I have shared quite a few of these ideas myself to ESP. I even submitted a full proposal around a high end limited type release that I thought would do well and would have a good balance between being profitable for them and giving collectors what they want.

But the list of what could be done is endless:

- Dual Autos
- Triple Autos
- Game Worn Jersey
- Game used ball
- A chrome/finest like set
- A High End Limited edition set

The list could go on.

I spent 30 mins doing a mock up of this card. How many Queenslanders would go crazy for something like this if it were released as one of the big chase card?

ESP have released some great cards and done more in the last 12-18 months than Select did in a while.....but my feeling is if they want to build there brand amongst collectors, they need to take the next step.

Cheers
Matt

Yes but if the effort and or cost went into it then i think it would be one of the premium sets to own.

I know i would pay extra for a set like this.

Have spoke to Terry on this. The problem is that the contract they have is with the NRL. So is they want to do anything pre 1998 they have to do deals with the ARL, NSWRL or QRL (or all or them). Unfortunately those organisations want the earth and they are not prepared to pay.

You may recall Select never had SOO cards (except for 2000). This is because they had to deal with NSWRL and QRL to get the rights and they would try to bend them over.

That is a nice looking card. I know that ESP has already been in contact with Lockyer's agent as well as Lewis and his agent regarding having them as signers. The players agent and ESP have to be able to meet at a realistic price before any players sign (excluding the rookies/ young kids who all get a flat rate)

Totally agree... there will be some players who will price themselves out of the market.....BUT......sometimes I think it would be worth paying that bit extra to create a great card. Just need to balance that out and find some savings across other inserts in the release.

You are right Matt, ESP has done more to destroy the card market in 18 months than Select ever did.

Honestly, i have to disagree.... I think Elite (aside from the mix up in ratios at pack out which led to 2 signatures in some boxes and none in others) was a really good product.

The first Limited Edition set had the ratios all wrong but some nice cards and Traders was ok except the insert sets were too small and the ratios were too far between an insert and a hit card. PowerPlay was designed for the kids and not collectors.

ESP make some really nice cards, have shown lots of promise and are heading in the right direction. I just wish they would expand on their releases especially a higher end release but not in the format I have heard being rumored around the traps.

I haven't been around footy cards long enough to know, but what were the first 3-4 select sets like? Seems like everyone seems to judge ESP by what select have done

Also as far as expanding on their releases, does anyone really think the Australian Rugby League card collectors market can handle 4 or even 5 releases a year?

I like the idea of this card tis is what you are looking at.
If you do it limited to 100.
Lockyer would cost $10,000
Wally Lewis $3500.00 to $5000
Allan Langer $1500.00 to $2000
At low end cost wise will be $15,000 for the cost is signatures which makes cost at min cost of $150 for the signatures plus card $10 each for the card so you would be looking to sell this at $400 to $500 and the other thing in Lockyer is now under a contract for offical signing.

Yes it can. If they are spread out more evenly.

My scenario would be this:

NRL Traders (Low End Mass Market) - Should be released Late February in time for season launch
NRL PowerPlay (Aimed at Kids) - March
Elite (Mid Tier Product) - April
Limited Edition (Rep Product) - June (Origin Time)
High End Product (Rumored for 2014) - Late July/Early August (Just before the Finals)

+

Premiership Release Set (one off released within 2 weeks of the Grand Final)

Anything more than this would be too much.

Even if you replace Lockyer with someone like Tallis or Smith.... I would make it more limited 25 or 50 cards max to reduce costs.

Those numbers are interesting though!

Cheers
Matt

it kills me but i agree with tak. elites turned out to be a joke. i sold some of my league sensations for 250 within the first few days of busting my case and now there going for like 100 some of them. so glad i sold them off, was going to keep them had they used all the same texta to sign.
