Forgetting about the hack job done to these cards. Surely a card with a bit of edge wear would be worth more than a card that has been trimmed to remove it.

I am with you over these assholes cutting cards thinking to rip people off. If you are cutting cards or doing dodgy things it is only a matter of time before you get done.

You guys probably won't believe me, but (without going through my main sets in folders looking for others) I have 9 spare checklists from that year sitting in front of me from packs that I opened at the time, that look like the card in question - or worse.

Personally, I think the checklist in question is more than likely UNmessed with.

Wouldn't be surprised if the other card linked is also just another bad Scanlens trimming job - note that despite the uneven right edge, the card appears wider than a regular card.

Well, i asked the question, so here is the response that i received. Obviously make up your own mind!

Hi & thanks for your question. These cards have been in my collection for 34 years & kept in a box. I can assure you I have never tampered with my cards. I did notice that my parramatta checklist is a little wonky but may well have been printed that way. I have the complete collection & these are my doubles so obviously I kept the best one of each for myself. I wouldn't in a million years think of doing something that under hand. Hope that answers your question. Thanks.

I did tend to agree that alot of those checklists from 1980 didn't get printed straight so hard to actually say either way if its cut or not. The one thing that i think does sound a bit suss is the description. Its unusual to point out can't see any edge wear.

Get them to measure them 63x89 may look cut. Although be the right measurement

A scan is attached. Without calipering the cards (and risking damage), most are not cut evenly. Some widths (shorter edge left to right measurements) vary by up to 1mm from the top edge to the bottom edge (anywhere from ~62.7 to ~63.8mm). Some are a square 63mm across the top and the bottom but the printing is skewed.

Your cards look cut/trimmed and in no way am i suggesting that you did that yourself, actually i am saying the opposite, that they came from scanlens like that. You say yours are out of the packet so they obviously came like that.
Firstly, lets forget about the centreing, the 1980 cards are shocking for that so i would love to know how companies would grade this series as most if not all cards are way out of alignment.

A few questions that i would like to put to you as a collector is, 'would you buy your cards if you saw them for sale on ebay'.
If you received cards like yours after buying them on ebay, would you say that you had been ripped off, i mainly mean the dimensions of each card.
Would a nicely edged set or even singles be of greater value.
Would you imply that they had been touched in some way, and what value would you put on your cards compared to say nicely edged cards.

I ask sincerely as i myself have 3 sets that i consider to be mostly excellent, a few good/very good, so by seeing cards like yours and the ones for sale by the seller in question, i would have to list mine differently if i was selling them. If i was listing a set for sale, surely i would measure the cards and note that in the listing so i could maximise the price.

Now that i have scanned mine, i do believe that a lot of these cards were cut incorrectly.

Hi Steve,

The cards are what they are. That's the way Scanlens trimmed them and packed them.

I realise that trimming is an issue with older cards these days however, by definition, trimming makes things smaller. If one measurement (length/width) for a card is BIGGER than standard, then it's pretty hard to say it has been trimmed! I agree, pretty hard to tell size from pics though. That's where knowledge has to come into it. In this case, you have to know that Scanlens cards from the 70s and 80s were never ALWAYS perfect (colours, centering and trimming are very common issues). Looking at a seller's other items and getting a general feel for them (look through their completed auctions, what they've been buying, etc) helps.

I have a slightly different philosophy when it comes to "grading". For me, if it comes out of a packet (and the packet wasn't crushed in the box!) it is in mint condition, pure and simple. It could be damaged, slightly to badly off centered, missing a colour (remember those Manly cards from 74 that looked like they were from Penrith!), misprinted, whatever - it is still "mint" in my mind.

The problem is that "mint", when talking about GRADING, refers to PERFECTION, not only condition. Honestly, when a "grading" company uses the word "MINT" is seriously p*sses me off - they should be using the word "PERFECT".

I think someone pulling out an old shoe box after 30 odd years wouldn't know or care if a card was perfect (or mint). So I don't have any issues with the seller in this case, or their listings.

If a collector was selling them, then yes, they would know trimming edges is now an issue and would probably have to add measurements to their listing to justify the "apparent" trimming. Pretty sad when something cheap and fun like footy cards requires forensics to be able to sell something without being villified!

For the record, I have sold some of these vintage cards recently (privately) and both described and imaged the "trimming issues".

If the card did appear to be recently trimmed (ie SMALLER in all dimensions) to produce good corners, then yes, I'd be jumping up and down.

I would state the facts, specifically stating that they had NOT been messed with, but point out any potential issues. Let's not say nicely edged but instead straight edged - then I would, like most, value a perfectly square card more than a trapezoidal card, assuming the same general condition.
