This is partly a whinge and partly my observations...

eBay is a MASSIVE company that must make so much money - without it our collections wouldn't even be near what they are today. However, I am of the belief that there are certain obligations/morals you should follow no matter how big or small you are.

It sickens me how many people scam/shill on ebay and get away with it.
Even with proof and when you report the items, they still do nothing about it.
So when you take it into your own hands (ie 100% obvious shilling, win item, leave negative feedback and report seller) - you still suffer (got the feedback removed and I got an unpaid strike). That was the first straw....

The second straw was the fiasco with the same seller as above acquiring the card I "stole" when I was the target of a scam. No matter what I did, I couldn't alert anybody to this fact because ebay doesn't care or want you to be able to contact them... I even called the postal service and tried to warn them incase the orignal owner had filed a false insurance claim - they weren't interested.

The final straw was contacting eBay. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, the ONLY option is to call them. Which is pretty ridiculous being a big international company. You used to be able to live chat. That's gone. You used to be able to message them. You can still do that but EVERY SINGLE TIME you get the same automated response - "please call".
I am not making an international toll call every time I have an issue or want to try to stop a scammer. Not only that, you have to go through an annoying and stupid automated menu to even get to talk to someone, and most of it is irrelevant. Plus you'll have already said everything that needed to be said in your message to them...

So, seeing as I feel that they're not fulfilling their obligations or providing a proper service, I decided that I wouldn't pay the fees on the sales I last made ($115). Every time they invoiced me I replied with the same automated message they sent me 'please call'.

I started getting messages saying 'your ebay fees are now due - please pay today'. So, I replied back with the same message asking them to call me.

After a few of those I got one saying 'MC027 EBI NOTICE: eBay Registration On Hold: Non Payment' - again, I replied saying they should call me.

Today, I received 'Your eBay buying and selling privileges have been restricted: Action Required US200' - yet hilariously on the same day they sent me 'List up to 1,000 items FREE. One day only!'

I don't get it - if they insist on you calling them for even the smallest problem, why aren't they calling me to get their money..? Of course I did this deliberately to make a point, and it has worked to some extent. eBay is a pathetic company and although nobody will stop using them, I have and am never going to pay what I owe them - until they call ;)

i did that once as well.

in the case of credit card i just used a prepaid card with no money and they couldnt debit me. ebay are a scum of a company for sure.

I will not allow them to just take it off my credit card (plus I don't think they've got one of mine on file). If they want to get debt collectors into this then fine, but otherwise the ball is in their court....

Plus, if they somehow take it out of my paypal account (which would have to be off my credit card) isn't that some kind of fraud... just because you own the company (and double-dip in fees) you don't have the right to just help yourself.
So, as far as I'm aware, there are only two ways they can get their money - call me or get debt collectors into this.

I'll keep you posted... ;)

be careful mate, they will take it from paypal, so make sure you have nothing linked.

I dont think they will chase you over $115 - will cost them more than $115 to do that. They will eventually write it off. F*ck them.

But how can they. They are two separate entities. It wouldn't surprise me, but there is no way they should be allowed to do that kind of thing just because they own both. You don't HAVE TO have paypal to have an eBay account, there were no terms when I signed up saying they could take anything from paypal to cover shortfalls...

And yeah, it's only $115 so I don't know how far they'll take it...

ebay / paypal got a debt collector onto me in early 2008 for approximately $43.

I reluctantly paid.

Unsure if they still go to these lengths - good luck though. Personally, I will never sell another item on ebay as long as i live.

Whenever I hadn't paid the Fee's ... they just take It straight outta my bank account via Paypal. I've had that happen like 10 times. But obviously best of luck to you G. With me, Ebay Is a love / hate thing ... It can be and IS a GREAT tool to use for so many things ... But can also screw you over at times. We've all had our bad or rocky times with Ebay ... Just gotta hang In there though. It's usually worth It.

You gotta remember, Ebay will get their money without you or me ... they don't care about a couple people that are going against them. There truely Isn't much that you can do.

But I do wish you luck bringing down / giving It to "The Man" ! ... But I'd just pay the fee and move on brother. Eventually they'll get their hands In your pocket.

Ah but Rob, you're in the US. I don't have a bank account or credit card linked to ebay. To be able to take it from me they would have to steal it off my credit card, which would be an unauthorised transaction. Ebay is great as a resource for finding most things you need, however their impersonal systems and ridiculous automation has made things absurd. I know I'm not going to make any difference, I'm just doing this because I feel strongly about it.

I hear you ... good luck G ... Should be Interesting to see what Ebay does !

If you don't have a bank account or credit card linked to Ebay ... then your right. But man that's just askin for trouble. ... The demise of Hairy brought on by Ebay

So does this mean your finished with Ebay ? ... That's heavy man. I have no idea what I'd do without Ebay ... probably have alot more money though.

Yep, I've been weaning my way off for a while and while there are still things I want, I won't be buying on my account again...

I mean, with things like this and ebay doing nothing, why would you want to participate?

more and more people are turning against ebay and not just us card collectors. other auction sites are growing larger. ebay is slowly getting a bad rep which is getting bigger and bigger every day. there will be a time when ebay will have a meeting and go " sh*t!! what have we done." its going to happen, its a question of when.
