Ebay Auctions Completed prices - Check.

Hey guys

something that has come to my attention recently that we all need to be careful is checking the completed auction prices on ebay.

Reason being it would be very easy for someone to tell you a completed price - but sometimes a picture does not tell the full story.

So tonight I searched Michael Jordan auto completed auctions as an example.

So from my phone you can see the auction ended at $1223.23US or from the second shot $1464AUS:

So using the Ebay App you can see it looks like it sold for $1465AUS

NOW that's where it gets tricky. Do not let anyone tell you the value of that card is $1465 as that's what the last one sold for.

The ebay app and mobile site show the full advertised price, so this card was listed at $1223.23US BIN. ($1465AUS)

HOWEVER it never ever sold for that price. It sold for a best offer price.

So now here are the screenshots from my laptop:

Original page showing best offer accepted: (right in the middle "Best Offer Accepted)

When you go to the print option to see the best offer price:

You'll see the actual sale price was $1100 (Ok not a huge difference - hey i picked a bad example OK), however you can see what I mean here.

The seller may have accepted a best offer of $500, meaning if someone was using the app or mobile site to look at completed auctions they would be significantly overpricing their card based on what they believe it sold for.

So if you are being told a sale price and shown a screen shot from the app or mobile site (m.ebay.com.au) do your homework and check it for yourself.

You can always use the website sortsof.com to see what something ended for, in the event that the print preview thing doesnt work for you (macbook, no printer so no print preview is my situation).

PS - you need to charge your phone!

The problem is the US site will not list the Best Offer sale price.

What I do is.....
1. Get the auction ID number of the best offer item that sold

2. Go into the Australian site www.ebay.com.au

3. Search for any item that has sold, THAT IS AN AUCTION SALE, and open it to the Bidding history page

4. On the http up the top of your web browser, replace the ID number of the auction that you just searched, with the item ID number of the one that you are searching for the Best offer sale price.

Looks like they took the short cut by just removing the link from the page, but the data is still stored in the same table and the function does not have a condition that checks for the item type that it is looking up.

But you know what, they will now send you a thank you message for being their tester, picking up this cross site defect.

Hey gang, saw your posts and videos supporting sortsof.com. I am the creator of the site and love seeing other collectors out there using the tool.

If you have any feedback or suggestions on how I can make the tool better for everyone, i'd love to hear them!

Thanks Brad - Welcome to the forum!

Love the tool, I noticed a real trend with collectors to use screenshots from the ebay app or ebay mobile site which showed the full BIN price and not the best offer price, so your site was magic!

One thing I noticed was that it does not show all auctions? For some reason I could not find the below auction, I had assumed that it was because it was on Ebay Australia, however I have found other cards listed on ebay AU.

Billy, thanks for the welcome!

That's interesting about that LBJ Prizm. I am not sure what, if any, restrictions the eBay API regarding the different eBay sites and how they would work on the site. I will need to do a little more research.
