This was a close game for the first 3 quarters, until Andre Iguodala started a last quarter run to lead his team to a 11 point win 64-53. A 3 pointer at the start of the 4th term by Iguodala started a 14-4 run in the first 2 and a half mins of the last quarter that saw them start the season with a good win at home. Iguodala added 4 stls and 2 asts and Alan Iverson scored 15 with 6 dimes. As a whole, the sixers shot 46% from the field as well as the Hawks. But it was the ability to get to the free throw line that helped the sixers as well as getting the all important second chance points.
The Hawks were in the game all the way thanks largely to the efforts of joe Johnson with 19pts, 4 rebs and 3 stls and Tyronne Lue who added 15 with 4/5 from 3 point land.
The scores throughout the first 3 quarters saw neither time get out by more than 6. Half time saw the Hawks lead 30-29 thanks to their 55%FG shooting compared to 38% for the sixers. But the Hawks inability to secure the defensive boards saw the sixers stay in the game. In the end the sixers strangled the offence of the Hawks, only allowing 12 points in the last quarter while their offence ran rampant with 23.
The coach for the Hawks, Colin Doessel said “The sixers came out tonight to looking to start their season off well in front of their home crowd. I thought we contained Iverson well for the first half holding him to only 5 points but you can never let up on a guy like that. He found a way to get to the line and found his team-mates with great passes. We just need to try to get more rhythm to our game. We brought in a lot of new guys over the off-season and we showed some potential. We played well but our last quarter saw us drop out of the game. We had a very nervous team in the dressing room this morning with high expectations already being put on us. Hopefully we can get back up against the Knicks at home on Friday and get our season going.â€
Rebounding Key in Win for Hawks
After a not so impressive outing against the Sixers, the Hawks came back with a well earned 6pt win against the Knicks. After an even first half which the Hawks led 30-27, they then went on a 17-6 3rd quarter to put the game out of question before the final quarter. The hawks shot 47% from the field while the knick were at 48%.
The Hawks were led by Joe Johnson who scored 21 pts 4 reb 6 ass 1 blk and 1 stl and Josh Smith with 12 pts 3 rebs and 3 blks. The Knicks had Crawford and Rose both score 13 apiece but the real factor was the rebounding count which saw the Hawks out-rebounded the Knicks 33-19. Zaza Pachulia was hugh on the boards with 10 reb including 6 offensive.
Coach Colin Doessel said, “This was a much better effort tonight. We played hard and stayed strong. We put Marbury under plenty of pressure which caused a few turnovers. We were able to give all our bench a bit of time on the floor. This is good at the start of the season, just to shake the cobwebs off. I think Joe was huge this game. He had 19 at the half and then when the Knicks tried to double team him he had the ability to find the open man to knock the shot down. Overall I’m very pleased with winning this game. Especially here, in front of our home crowd, in Atlanta.â€
Joe Johnson showed why he’s an all-star in the making by draining 30 points on the Magic. After scoring 19 points in the first half, including 12 in the second quarter, he lead the Hawks to a good 11pt win 57-46.
A 17-9 second quarter saw the Hawks rarely threatened after closing the half at 32-24. The closest the magic got was 6 points half way through the 3rd quarter. Dwight howard was the best for the magic with 12pts, 6 reb and 3 ast. Grant hill also chipped in with 11pts, 4 reb and 2 ast. But it was Johnson who stole the show shooting at 63% from the field.
Coach Doessel said later that night, “It was a good game. We were able to control the momentum of the game with ease. We held Dwight and Jameer well. We’ve got a roll on now and I think were ready for the Cavs tomorrow.â€
King James Reigns Supreme
A 25 point showing by MVP candidate Lebron James gave the Cavs an easy 13 point win 56-43 at home against the Hawks. The Cavs controlled the whole first half finishing it with a 38-21 lead. Poor shooting cost the hawks who shot only 33% in the first half compared to 73% for the cavs. That and the Cavs superiority on the boards, 29-13 allowed the cavs to control the rest of the game without to much trouble. Late in the last quarter, the hawks did get to with 3, with three 3 pointers in a row from clutch man Tyronn Lue. But after a Lebron 3 point play, they were never headed
Donyell Marshall was huge on the offensive boards, with 6 of his 10 boards on the offensive end. He backed it up to record his first double double of the season with 10 points. The only notable hawk contributions came from Joe Johnson with 18 pts, Hedo Turkoglu with 14 off the bench as well as Lue with 11 in the last quarter.
Coach Doessel had this to say after the game. “We just took to many stupid shots. We never tried to get to the line and Cleveland was just too good for us today. We have a game in 2 days time. Hopefully we can sort out our shot selection issues and get back on track.â€
