Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the next step in card collecting.

I personally like to hold & feel cards in my hands & really aren't interested in them but maybe I'm a dinosaur as I prefer physical objects not stuff stored in clouds ect.
Whats everyone else thoughts?

Agreed. In hand is far better than digital. No reason they can't make cards with a code that activates a feature on an App or on-line.

For example a Try of the Year card that can be scanned in an App to show you the actual try.

A Top Try Scorer for each club that can scan and play each try

A Retirement card that can scan and show some career highlights of that player etc etc

So many options available and you still have the card in hand.

Yeah I agree with everyone above, unless you can hold it in hand I don't want it.
I've heard Tap & Play will have digital cards for the World Cup in England for the Player of the match for every game 48 cards in total.
That's why I wanted to know everyone's opinion on Digital Cards because it's a huge investment by them.

A card, by definition, can NOT be digital.

One example of a definition: "a piece of thick, stiff paper or thin pasteboard, in particular one used for writing or printing on"

Call it something else and there will be no issues, just don't try and ride on the back of an established collectable!

Re the basic concept, I am old school - if I buy something I want something physical. I don't believe in loading data onto the cloud, digital music, etc. Too easy for anything digital to be hacked/stolen/deleted. Probably great for the younger generation though, who only know how to use a phone (and are stuffed when they drop them!).

Imagine the Todd Carney or Joel Monaghan cards 😂😂

I like cards in hand.

But I'd like interactivity from the card to digital.

Someone mentioned the try cards.

That said, companies are finding it hard enough to source or afford the high cost of the pics for common cards (down from 12 to 9 these days), how much would it cost to link cards to film clips of footy events?

As for kids...I know a lot who love them but cost is the killer. They need a basic entry level common card set with no bells and whistles that's $1-$2 a pack.

Not a fan although I liked what Select did with the AFL a few years back. They had some sort of digital app where you could collect a digital set but also win redemptions for a physical set.

Imagine the size of the album^ .
And how do you number the cards (( joel), also how do you fit a number 1 or 2 in your album, every time you looked at it, you would need a lot of white out, and wipes).

Atleast everyone could have a Carney number 1 card I suppose ?

Well George, i say let them go for it and choke on it.

With running a print section and doing a bit of graphic design myself under a marketing department, id rather them in hand. I like the different foiling and coating finishes, with bringing on different artists for the captain / galactic cards. If video content would be to expensive, maybe link via QR codes to club websites with phone wallpapers, ringtones of club songs, free tickets or team experiences for low numbered cards etc plenty of content and ideas for the clubs themselves to produce to get traffic. Obviously targeted at non Elite releases i guess for the kids.

This is only to be done so tla can keep the nrl licence, as a digital content needs to be done.
